The Boston Red Sox might have a huge problem on their hands. On Monday, third baseman and team superstar Rafael Devers straight up refused to give up his 3B position to Alex Bregman. This is something that has not sat down well with the fans on social media.

Devers signed a 10-year $313.5 million contract extension with the team. At that time, the Red Sox front office was led by Chaim Bloom, who seemingly gave Devers his word that the third base position was his.

Recently the Red Sox landed Bregman on a 3-year $120 million deal. The 2-time All-Star has played his career in the third base position. Following his signing it was reported that Devers would be transitioned as a designated hitter (DH) while he takes the 3B.

However, Devers has refused to yield his position. The third baseman boldly stated that this is his position and he has already made that clear with the team management.

Third base is my position. It’s what I’ve played. I don’t know what their plans are. I know we had a conversation. I made it clear, kind of what my desires were and whatever happens from here, I don’t know.

When it comes to defensive abilities, Bregman edges out Devers. The former Houston Astros star has won a gold glove for this position in the past. On the other hand, Devers once again had several errors last season.

However, it did show an improvement from the 2023 season. As per MLB stats, the Dominican international had a -6 score in the Outs Above Average category. In 2023, it was -9, so there has been an improvement regarding it.

The Boston Red Sox fans were urging the team to land a top slugger in the offseason. Now that they have roped in Alex Bregman, a new problem regarding Rafael Devers refusing to let go of the third base position has come up.

Fans on social media did not seem to like the comments of Devers and slammed him. On X, many would sarcastically applaud him for being a “team player“. Some others urged the team to trade him away. Meanwhile, one simply wrote that he “needs to have a reality check” while reacting to it.

Speaking on this matter, Manager Alex Cora said that a decision regarding this will be made later on. With the Spring training underway, the Red Sox organization has some big decisions to make before the new season starts.
