Rafael Devers has once again caused a massive stir on social media. The Boston Red Sox star refusing to play as the 1st baseman has not sat well with the fans, leading to many slamming him for his actions.

Last week, during the game against the Minnesota Twins, the Red Sox suffered a massive blow as first baseman Triston Casas got injured. The 1B got hurt while running towards first base. It was later revealed that he had ruptured his patellar tendon in his knee and will be out for the remainder of the season.

With Casas sidelined for a long time, the Red Sox management turned towards Devers and asked him to play as the 1st baseman for the team. The Dominican International straight up refused to do that and criticized the front office.

I know I’m a ballplayer, but at the same time, they can’t expect me to play every single position out there. In spring training, they talked to me and basically told me to put away my glove, that I wasn’t going to play any other position but DH. So right now, I just feel like it’s not an appropriate decision by them to ask me to play another position.

Rafael Devers told the reporters

This stance from Devers comes after he already had some position drama with the team. After the signing of Alex Bregman, the 28-year-old was asked to transition from 3rd baseman to Designated Hitter (DH). He would initially refuse to yield his position, leading to a huge uproar on social media.

Manager Alex Cora, though, would give the 3B nod to Bregman and gave the DH position to Devers. This transition saw Devers struggle at the plate in the first few games. He would set some unwanted MLB records while trying to get used to the DH position.

At the moment, Devers is doing well in this position. This could be the reason he does not want to have another position change this season.

A position change in MLB is a big transition. Having played a majority of his career as the 3rd baseman, Rafael Devers was asked to play as the DH and not take the field during the 2025 season. While he eventually accepted that role, he has now refused to play as the 1st baseman of the team.

Fans on social media were left stunned when the words of Devers went viral. Several users on X slammed him for these comments and took a swipe at him. One user wrote, “What a clown” while reacting to this.

If Devers continues to refuse to play as the 1st baseman, what options does the team have? The Red Sox could move 2nd baseman Kristian Campbell to this position, following his impressive batting performances. Apart from him, the team could look at Romy Gonzalez and Abraham Toro as other internal options.

Rafael Devers is a loser. Thanks for doing nothing to help the team. Enjoy your $330 million check.

As the DH of the team, Devers is hitting with a .255 batting average after 39 games of the 2025 season. He has hit 6 home runs and driven in 25 runs through his 37 hits. His home run against the Texas Rangers on Thursday saw his team win 5-0 and improve their record to 20-19 for the year.
