It seems the new role the Boston Red Sox put Rafael Devers in is not suiting him. Following the 4-3 loss on Saturday against the Texas Rangers, the Dominican international set an unwanted MLB record to start the new season.

Ahead of this season, the Red Sox made a big decision regarding him. After weeks of internal discussion, the 28-year-old star was given the Designated Hitter (DH) position while the third base position went to newly signed superstar Alex Bregman.

This new roles means that Devers will only hit during the game and not take to the field during the team’s defense. However, this role does not seem to be working out for him.

In the first three games of the season against the Rangers, Devers struck out 10 times. As per Bob Nightengale of USA Today, this is the most any batter has been struck out in the opening three games of the season.

Devers is yet to hit in the new season. He is currently 0-for-12 this year. With one Base on balls (BB), he has one RBI in these three games.

Last season, Devers struck out 147 times in his 525 at-bats. While this random slump to start a 162-game season might not mean much later on, it is still something that the Red Sox fans do not want to see.

Despite his defensive frailties, Devers is one of the top bats of the team. During the offseason, fans urged the team to land a top bat for the team to take some of the offensive pressure off his shoulders. In this slump of him, his side has lost the chance of winning the opening series and have a 1-2 record after 3 games.

Rafael Devers found himself in hot water after he refused to yield the third base position. The 3-time MLB All-Star eventually had to settle with the DH position as manager Alex Cora picked Alex Bregman as the third baseman.

The DH spot so far has not produced positive results for Devers. In the 2025 season he is yet to register a single hit. After setting an unwanted record with this slump, several users on X trolled him. One user wrote, “Bro can’t even DH” while reacting to this development.

The Red Sox will now turn their attention to Sunday’s game, hoping to at least split the 4 games series with the Rangers and start on some positive note. After this, they will be involved in a three-game series against their division rivals, the Baltimore Orioles.

The decision to make Rafael Devers play as the designated hitter for the team was going to be big one. So far it has not worked out as many would have wanted. This has led to some wondering whether he could play as the third baseman again?

While that could be an option for the team, manager Alex Cora refused to give him that spot. In a recent interview, he was asked whether he could give Devers the third base spot on a off-day for Bregman. The Red Sox manager denied that and pointed out that have players who can play in 3B if Bregman has a day off.

Devers did make some defensive mistakes last season as well. At the end of the year, he had a -6 Outs Above Average. This was a slight increase from the 2023 edition, though, as he had -9 OAA in that season. Meanwhile, Bregman had a 6 OAA in the 2024 campaign, which saw him win the AL Gold Glove for this position.
