On Tuesday, Rafael Devers made his long-awaited debut at the 1st base position. Following a ‘comfortable‘ debut in a new position against the Atlanta Braves, the 3-time MLB All-Star seemingly threw a subtle shade at his former team, the Boston Red Sox.

Earlier this year, Devers had a fallout with the Red Sox. The third baseman, who was in the 2nd year of his massive 10-year deal, was asked by the team to give up the position and play as the designated hitter (DH) of the team after they signed Gold Glove winner Alex Bregman.

After initially refusing to do that, Devers would accept the DH role. He would have a slow start to the season, but did manage to find his top form once again. In May, he was asked to play as the 1st baseman for the team as Triston Casas suffered a season-ending injury. The Dominican international would turn down the chance to return to the field and denied that.

Following a series sweep of their rivals, the New York Yankees, the Red Sox would trade away Devers to the San Francisco Giants. Upon arrival in the Bay Area, Devers claimed that he would play the 1st base position for his new team.

On Tuesday, Devers finally stepped up to the first plate. The 28-year-old would have an error-free debut in the new position. After his debut, the player claimed that he would rather be on the field than in the batting cage.

I felt very comfortable. I’ve been practicing for a while. It’s really good that I was able to get out there, but most importantly, we won the game. It keeps me active, and it keeps my head out of just thinking of the next at-bat. I’m the kind of player who likes to be active and likes to be on the field. I’d rather be on the field than be in the cage hitting all the time.

Rafael Devers told the reporters through his interpreter Erwin Higueros

A few weeks ago, there had been reports that Devers skipped 1st base workout with former Giants star Will Clark when the Red Sox were in town. However, Clark backed Devers and expressed that he perhaps did not want to try out a new position in front of his ex-teammates.

The Giants were able to shutout the Braves and claimed a 9-0 win. This victory ended their 6-game losing skid and improved their record to 53-49 for the season.

Rafael Devers still adjusting to SF Giants following blockbuster trade from Red Sox

The MLB world was left in shock when the Boston Red Sox traded away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. The infielder was one of the top members of his team and was in the second year of his massive deal.

The AL East side would trade him in exchange for 4 players. The SF Giants, on the other hand, took over the entire contract of Devers.

Since moving a month ago, the player is still getting adjusted to his new surroundings. In the 73 games for the Red Sox this year, Devers batted with a .272 average while hitting 15 home runs and driving in 58 runs.

In the 30 games he has played for the Giants so far, he has looked like a shadow of his former self. He has managed just 2 home runs and 11 RBI while hitting with a .227 average. For the entire season, Devers has batted with .2589 average with 17 home runs and 69 RBI from 103 games.

Since his trade move, the two teams have had mixed results. The Red Sox went on a huge winning run and are 17-13 in the last 30 games.

Meanwhile, the Giants have suffered a dip in their form and lost a little edge against their NL East rivals. The Giants have a 12-18 record since they landed Devers.
