Rafael Devers is once again facing the heat. As per reports, the 3-time All-Star seemingly skipped 1st base workouts with a former San Francisco Giants star after his blockbuster trade move from the Boston Red Sox.
Devers has been in the spotlight for several unwanted reasons this year. The player first refused to give up his 3rd base position after the Red Sox roped in Gold Glove winner Alex Bregman.
He would then even turn down the request to play in the 1st base position as well following the season-ending injury to Triston Casas. As a result of this, there had been some tensions between him and the front office of the Red Sox.
After sweeping the New York Yankees last month, the Red Sox stunned the world by announcing the trade of Devers to the Giants. The Dominican international, who had signed a massive $313.5 million contract extension in 2023, was traded just a year after this massive deal came into effect.
Upon his arrival at the Giants, Devers expressed that he was ready to play in any position, including the 1st base. However, during an appearance at the No Filter Network, former Giants star Will Clark expressed that Devers would ghost him when the team asked him to mentor the player for this new position immediately after his move from Boston.
Friday, Saturday, Sunday, he did not come out early, at all. Period, not all. In fact, he didn’t even hit on the field. Everybody’s like, ‘Oh my God, I’m so sorry, Will. I’m so sorry.
He, though, did back Devers and expressed why he thought that Devers skipped him. As per Clark, the ex-Red Sox Star perhaps did not want to take drills at 1st base in front of them after turning down the chance to try this position for them.
I know what the f*** happened. I said, he didn’t want to go out and be at first base and be 20 feet in front of their freaking dugout with what went on in Boston, and now he’s working with me at first base. He didn’t want to have to go through all that s*** through the press in the media. So, I completely understand.
While Clark gave him the pass this time, he did hilariously warn Devers that next time he is in San Francisco, he would grab the back of his neck and drag him out on the field to take park in 1st base workouts.
Clark, a 6-time MLB All-Star, played eight seasons with the Giants in his career. Since 2009, he has been part of the Giants’ front office and has worked as a special assistant.
Rafael Devers spotted taking 1st base workout amidst backlash
Rafael Devers has faced a huge amount of heat from baseball fans this season for his actions off the field. He once again got criticized recently, as a story from Boston Red Sox announcer Will Flemming regarding him not taking 1st base workout broke out. In the middle of this, he was actually spotted taking some drills at the 1st base.

As per a video shared on X by @NBCSGiants, Devers could be seen practicing for the 1st base position. This comes just hours after Will Clark’s story went viral.

Devers was expected to play as the first baseman on the team’s recent road trip. However, due to a nagging back problem, his debut in this position for the Giants has been delayed again. On Tuesday, against the Philadelphia Phillies, he once again played as the Designated Hitter (DH) and batted second in the lineup.
His batting average has come down a bit since the move from Boston to San Francisco. In the 21 games he has played for the Giants, the 28-year-old has managed to hit just 2 home runs and drive in 9 runs while hitting at a .234 average.
While he was on the Red Sox, he did have a slow start to the new season, but did find his top form with them before the trade. He batted with a .272 average with 15 home runs and 58 RBI in 73 games for his ex-team.
Despite these numbers, Devers will not be an All-Star this year. He was leading the fan voting for the DH spot while he was in the American League. With him in the National League after the trade, he was blown away from the DH spot voting by Shohei Ohtani. So, he will not be part of the traditional game this year at Truist Park in a few days.
