This past Sunday, the MLB received a major shock when the Boston Red Sox traded away Rafael Devers to the San Francisco Giants. On Tuesday, Devers expressed that he is ready to play any position for the team, which ignited some wild reactions on social media.

Devers had established himself as one of the top names in the Red Sox’s lineup in recent years. However, he also found himself facing the heat of fans for some of his actions off the field.

Earlier this year, the Dominican international declined to give up his 3rd base position for Alex Bregman. He would later also turn down the request of the Red Sox to play in the 1st base position following the season-ending injury to Triston Casas.

There had been some rumors that Devers could be traded. However, due to the large contract he had signed with the team in 2023, it did not seem likely. The Red Sox thus shocked the world by giving away one of their top stars on Sunday, a few hours after he had homered again against the New York Yankees and helped his side sweep their arch-rivals.

Before the game against the Cleveland Guardians on Tuesday, Devers was officially introduced as a Giants star. During the introductory press conference, the 28-year-old expressed that he will play any position the team wants.

They’re the men in charge. I’m here to play wherever they want me to play.

As per Giants GM Bob Melvin, Devers will play as the designated hitter (DH) for the time being before playing 1st base. Devers was seen taking some ground balls at 1st base during one of the training sessions.

Rafael Devers came under heavy criticism after he refused to play 1st base for the Boston Red Sox. The internal disputes between him and the team management eventually led to him being traded away. The player is now ready to play in the 1st base position for the San Francisco Giants.

His comments have once again sparked wild reactions. While some trolled the Red Sox again, some of them did not like these words from him. One user on X wrote, “Bro just hated Boston” while reacting to this.

Check out that and some more fan reactions regarding this below:

In his first game for the Giants, Devers collected 2 hits and one RBI. He went 2-for-5 in his debut for his team and gave them a 2-1 lead in the third inning. The Giants though ended up losing the game 3-2 to the Guardians and dropped the series opener.

While speaking on the trade of Devers on the B/R Walk-Off Live podcast, Pedro Martinez claimed that he was ‘shocked‘ to see his fellow countrymen being traded. The MLB Hall of Famer backed him and sounded off against those who expressed that he was a “bad teammate” or “bad influence” in the clubhouse.

I was shocked because if you try to sell to me, knowing Raffy Devers, that Raffy is a bad teammate or he’s not a team player, you’re lying. You’re gonna tell me he’s a bad influence in the clubhouse? He’s not.

Martinez would call out his former teammate and fellow Red Sox legend, David Ortiz. The former pitcher claimed that ‘Big Papi‘ was wrong in trying to speak with Devers while the cameras were around them. He expressed that Ortiz should have added a personal touch instead of speaking in front of everyone.

Ortiz broke his silence regarding the trade on Monday night. The ex-DH of the Red Sox claimed that this trade of Devers should be taken as a lesson by other players that nobody is indispensable and needs to keep their ego in check.
