Last month Rafael Nadal left his fans disappointed as he pulled out of the US Open. However, the 22-time Grand Slam champion was expected to play at the Laver Cup in Berlin but Nadal nullified that possibility as well. The 38-year-old announced that he won’t play in the Roger Federer-founded tournament as he wanted other players to deliver for the team.

This meant that any hopes of seeing Nadal in action in the remainder of the 2024 season were quashed. However, there is the slightest chance that the Spaniard might return to action before the season wraps up. Spain captain David Ferrer has hinted that Nadal might make a comeback in Malaga to represent their team in the Davis Cup Finals.

As Spain qualified for the final leg of the World Cup of Tennis with a win over Australia in Valencia, Ferrer claimed that Nadal could return and might pair up with Carlos Alcaraz, just like it happened at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Yes, I have spoken to him. I don’t know yet [about whether he will be in Malaga], but why not? There is a possibility that he could be with us in Malaga. Regarding his refusal to be in Valencia, I knew that his objective was the Games and then to decide, he also had holidays. He was on tour competing and playing.

Nadal last played on the tour in August when he competed at the Summer Games in Paris with Alcaraz. The Spanish duo, in their first-ever tournament together, made it to the quarterfinals and exhibited great camaraderie.

David Ferrer talked about Rafael Nadal‘s absence from the group-stage ties at the Davis Cup Finals. The Spanish captain feels that it was important for the 38-year-old to take some rest. However, Ferrer is also optimistic about the four-time Davis Cup champion’s return to action in Malaga.

The retired tennis star said that it is his job to discuss this with Nadal and while there is uncertainty about it happening, Ferrer is certain that if Nadal returns, he will be recharged and ready to go.

He has recharged his batteries, and from there, whether he decides to be in Malaga or not is something that I will discuss with him. We will decide what we do with him. The important thing is that Rafa is well, I know that if he is well and eager, he will arrive in Malaga in very good condition.

Nadal last played at the World Cup of Tennis in 2019. The 14-time French Open champion boasts of a staggering 29-1 win-loss record in singles matches at the team tournament and has also been involved in several doubles rubbers. While the chances of him playing singles are grim, Nadal can partner with Carlos Alcaraz to help Spain lift the title once again.
