Rafael Nadal is expected to receive an emotional farewell at this year’s Davis Cup with the Spanish National Team. The left-hander announced his retirement last week and confirmed that he will conclude his career at the end of this year’s Davis Cup event.
One person who will be deeply affected by the occasion is Nadal’s coach, Carlos Moya. The 1998 Roland Garros champion joked that he might need to go through a “period of mourning” to cope with the 22-time Grand Slam champion’s retirement.
Nadal and Moya have shared a special relationship, first as tennis rivals and later as colleagues. The two played each other eight times, with the much younger Nadal holding a 6-2 head-to-head advantage.
In 2016, Nadal hired Moya as his full-time coach after parting ways with his uncle, Toni Nadal. Toni later joined Felix Auger-Aliassime’s team, while Nadal continued his path to greatness with Moya, winning eight Grand Slam titles during their partnership.
Rafael Nadal’s schedule until Davis Cup revealed
It has been confirmed when Rafael Nadal will begin training with his teammates for the Davis Cup finals, which will mark the final tournament of his career. The tennis legend is set to retire after the event, bringing an end to his remarkable time in professional tennis.
On October 10, the sports world was stunned when Nadal announced his decision to retire through a video message. He will aim to conclude his career on a high note by winning the Davis Cup for the sixth time with his Spanish team.
Nadal’s career achievements are extraordinary, including 22 Grand Slam singles titles, 36 Masters 1000 titles, and two Olympic gold medals. Before heading to Malaga for the Davis Cup, Nadal will participate in the ‘Six Kings’ exhibition event in Saudi Arabia, where he will play on October 17 against either Carlos Alcaraz or Holger Rune, with another match scheduled for October 19.
According to Marca, Nadal will arrive in Malaga on November 14 to begin training with his teammates Pablo Carreno Busta and Roberto Bautista Agut. Carlos Alcaraz and Marcel Granollers will miss the first training session on November 15, as they will be competing in the ATP Finals, which will run from November 10 to 17. The Davis Cup finals will take place from November 19 to 24, just two days after the ATP season-ending event wraps up.
