Rafael Nadal did not play Wimbledon to prepare for the Paris Olympics, which is scheduled to start on July 27. His compatriot Carlos Alcaraz, with whom he will play doubles in the Olympics, emerged victorious at SW19 for the second time in a row with a thumping win over Novak Djokovic 6-2, 6-2, 7-6(7-4) in the final.
Tennis fans have started predicting incredible achievements for Alcaraz, but nobody knows what lies ahead. Nadal can only say that Alcaraz can become one of the greatest players, but to do that, along with playing a high level of tennis, Alcaraz will need to avoid injuries.
I feel like we are talking about a player who is going to be one of the best in history. That's my feeling. He is a player with great potential. Everything can change quickly in life, that’s the truth. You never know what might happen in the future. But today, if we have to predict what will happen in his career, we predict incredible things.Rafael Nadal said during the press conference at Nordea Open
Nadal, who himself has dealt with injuries throughout his career, also can’t see any other player other than World No.1 Jannik Sinner to challenge Alcaraz. The 22-time Grand Slam champion thinks these two youngsters will rule the tennis world in the years to come.
Before clinching his third trophy of the year at Wimbledon, Alcaraz took home his first Roland Garros title by defeating Germany’s Alexander Zverev in five sets in the final. The 21-year-old’s next big goal is to bring home the Olympic gold with Nadal.
Rafael Nadal beat Leo Borg in Nordea Open’s first round
After missing Wimbledon, Rafael Nadal is participating in the Nordea Open- a clay-court event in Bastad, Sweden, where he beat Leo Borg in the first round in straight sets 6-3, 6-4. It was the 14-time French Open winner’s first appearance in the tournament since winning it in 2005.
He is now set to face Britain’s Cameron Norrie in the next round, scheduled on July 18. The match will be Nadal’s sixth one against Norrie, and he is looking forward to improving his head-to-head record to 5-1.
Norrie, who has also met Nadal two times at major events, defeated him in their previous meeting in the 2023 United Cup. The 38-year-old Spaniard is also playing doubles matches in the tournament with three-time Grand Slam finalist Casper Ruud.
