Roger Federer, 20 time Grandslam champion made the headlines after he withdrew his name from the Australian Open 2021. The Swiss maestro has been on the sidelines since February, after he suffered a season-ending knee injury. However, he was set to make a comeback at the Australian Open 2021 after undergoing two operations and beginning his rehabilitation program.

Roger Federer could not make a full recovery and will not compete at the Melbourne Park in 2021. However, the Swiss has not stopped his comeback preparations. He is currently training in Dubai where he also celebrated Christmas with his family. His biggest rival and a close friend off court, Rafael Nadal took to Twitter to show support. The Spaniard hoped that Federer would make a comeback soon in the upcoming season.

The ATP Twitter handle posted a picture of Federer with the news of his withdrawal from the Australian Open 2021. They captioned it, “We hope to see you back on court soon, Roger Federer.” Rafa Nadal went ahead and retweeted the post.

Roger Federer, 40 next year, will have to pick and choose the tournaments he will play in 2021. It is expected that the Swiss has delayed his comeback with a sight on the long summer in 2021, with the Wimbledon, US Open and the Tokyo Olympics all taking place in a span of under two months.

It will be interesting to see if Federer competes in the clay-court season which he has often skipped in the past 5 years. His only appearance at the French Open in the past five years came in 2019. He is almost certain to compete at the Wimbledon and at the Tokyo Olympics, given that it will be his last chance to win an Olympic Singles Gold Medal and complete his Career Golden Slam.
