Rafael Nadal will compete at the Rome Masters, next week where he aims to collect his tenth title, and enter double figures. The Spaniard is seeded second in Rome, and comes on the back of a shocking defeat in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open 2021.
Rafael Nadal was defeated in straight sets in the quarterfinals of the Madrid Open by Alexander Zverev. However, he does have one title to his name this season, as he claimed the Barcelona Open title a few weeks ago. He has received a bye in the first round in Rome, and has a tough draw in front of him.
Rafael Nadal handed a tough draw
Rafael Nadal will face the winner of match between Ugo Humbert and Jannik Sinner in the second round. Both players are good clay courters, and as such it will be a tricky second round encounter for the Spaniard. In the third round, he will face either of Denis Shapovalov or Casper Ruud. The latter has reached the semifinals of Madrid Open 2021, and is in red hot form at the moment.
In the quarterfinals, he is expected to face Alexander Zverev, who defeated him in the quarterfinals in Madrid. The duo are in the same quarter of the draw once again. The Spaniard will face Diego Schwartzman or Daniil Medvedev in the semifinals. Schwartzman defeated Nadal at the Italian Open last year in the quarterfinals in straight sets.
If the Spaniard manages to get through these matches, he will face Novak Djokovic or Dominic Thiem in the finals. Rafael Nadal and Djokovic played out a three set match at the Italian Open 2019 in the finals, where Nadal emerged victorious.
