Spain’s sporting boom continued today as Rafael Nadal returned to action in Bastad where he partnered Casper Ruud to knock out the second seeds, Miguel Angel Reyes-Varela and Guido Andreozzi, in the first round of men’s doubles. The pair came through 6-1, 6-4 in dominating fashion.

During the on-court interview, Nadal was asked about Spain’s recent success in the sporting world, with Carlos Alcaraz winning the French Open and Wimbledon titles and the Spanish national soccer team lifting the UEFA Euro Championship trophy.

I think the Spanish team played amazing from the first day of the Euros to the last. The whole country is very proud. A very happy day yesterday too, with Carlos winning Wimbledon. It was an amazing day for Spanish sport. Sport generates motivation and passion for people. That’s good for the country without a doubt.

He kicked off his doubles campaign with a convincing win, but fans await to see the King of Clay perform his magic in singles. Their wait will soon be over as Nadal is set to play his first-round match tomorrow (July 16th).

He will take on Leo Borg, son of the legendary Swede Bjorn Borg. The 21-year-old has big shoes to fill and even bigger opponents to face, but is sure to have some home support despite playing one of the most influential players of all time.
