In an interview with LaVanguardia at the 77th Gala of Mundo Deportivo, Rafael Nadal filled in with some brief details about his life post-retirement, focusing on his time with his son. When asked if he still plays tennis, Nadal replied that since his last match in Malaga, he has only played a little with his son at home.

The Spaniard added that now, he is just trying to organize himself outside of sport. Without realizing it, Nadal said that he already has a lot of work to do that he can’t avoid, but needs some time to decide what he wants to do beyond.

On 8 October 2022, Rafael Nadal and his wife Maria Francisca Perello had a son named Rafael. When asked about whether his son, now 2 years old, play tennis with his right or left hand, Nadal replied that his son doesn’t play with any of them at the moment, before further shedding light on the same.

He doesn’t play with one or the other, for the moment. He does what he can, one day he plays football, another day golf, another day tennis. He plays, he’s a child.

Rafael Nadal was awarded the Excellent Trophy by Mundo Deportivo

At the age of 38, Rafael Nadal announced his retirement from tennis on October 10, 2024. He played the final match of his career against Netherland’s Botic van de Zandschulp in the quarterfinals of the Davis Cup 2024 which was held in Malaga, Spain, a month after his public announcement of his then-impending retirement.

Nadal had an illustrious career in tennis lasting over two decades, with 92 career titles, including 22 Grand Slam titles. He boasts a record 14 French Open titles, rightly earning him the moniker “King of Clay”.

After his retirement, Nadal attended his first award ceremony at the Spanish newspaper Mundo Deportivo’s Gala, which was held at the Palau de Congressos de Catalunya in Barcelona. He was awarded the Excellent Trophy this year at the Gala, which took place on February 3, 2025.

Several other prominent Spanish sportsmen and sportswomen’s accomplishments were also honoured at the Gala. These include the likes of two-time Ballon d’Or Feminin winner Aitana Bonmati, Spain’s most decorated Paralympian in history- Teresa Perales, and the Spanish men’s football team, which had a successful previous season winning the Euro 2024, Olympic gold at Paris 2024, and the Nations League (2023).
