Rafael Nadal has a few weeks of professional tennis left before he hangs up his racket. The Spaniard has won everything the sport can offer and has claimed most titles several times. However, he is behind Novak Djokovic in the Grand Slam tally, despite once being in the lead.

Nadal has stated that he would have loved to surpass the Serbian’s Major title tally. When he claimed his 22nd Major title at the 2022 French Open, he became the first male player to achieve the feat. At that time, Djokovic had claimed only 21 Grand Slams.

However, in 2023, Djokovic won three of the four Grand Slams, which took his tally to 24 and his lead over Nadal to two. Following his retirement announcement, Nadal will finish his career with 22 Majors to his name.

This means that Djokovic can stretch the lead over his arch-rival and perhaps solidify his position as the greatest player of all time. In a recent interview, Nadal revealed that he would have loved to have 25 Slams to his name.

You reach the end of your career and, honestly, I am not more satisfied than Federer for having 22 and him 20. And I don’t think I would be more satisfied or happy if I had 25, one more than Djokovic’s 24. I say it from the heart. Of course, I would like to be at 25, without a doubt, because that’s what sport is all about, trying to be the best. However, when it is over, you value what has been all together, not if it has been a little more.

What I am most proud of is having finished my career and leaving tennis with the satisfaction of feeling valued and loved, not only by the public, who in the end can have a more passionate view of what the sport itself is, because what they see are your successes and there is a certain attitude towards all of that.
