Ahead of the 2024 Paris Olympics, former World No. 1 Rafael Nadal has once again spoken about his retirement. He has stated that he is in the twilight of his career but decided against giving an official retirement date as of now.

Nadal will be teaming up with Carlos Alcaraz at the Summer Games in the French capital. The tennis event is taking place at the same venue as Roland Garros, a tournament the left-hander has won 14 Grand times.

The Spaniard has admitted he is undecided over where and when he will call time on his career.

It is a reality, there are many chances that it will be my last year without any doubt. There are chances that it may only be half a year, there are possibilities it may be a full year, that we may not be able to reach all that. These are things right now I do not have the capacity to be able to answer. This is the truth.

He also said that he hopes to keep playing as long as he can be competitive and continue to have fun.

If I keep enjoying doing what I am doing and I feel myself competitive and healthy enough to enjoy, I want to keep going for a while. I need to give myself a little bit longer chance to see if my level is growing and my body is holding, and then let’s make a decision. Give me two months until the Olympics, and then let’s see if I am able to keep going or I say, ‘okay guys, it’s more than enough’.

Last week, Nadal was rumored to take part in the US Open later this year. However, he has not yet made any announcement about his plans for Flushing Meadows. The only tournament he has been confirmed to play is the Laver Cup. Ironically, the 38-year-old was last seen at that event in 2022, where he was famously seen crying at the retirement of long-term rival Roger Federer.

Nadal is going to partner with Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s doubles, and the pair have been named one of the favorites for the gold medal. The 38-year-old sees the Summer Games as possibly his last chance to compete in Paris.

Ahead of the quadrennial event, he stated that he was confident in Alcaraz’s abilities and hoped to be in the best possible shape when he takes to the courts in Paris.

I know that if I can produce good tennis in singles, it will also be in doubles – but I have to analyse what happened this week and work hard. I am convinced that Carlos Alcaraz is going to be at a very good level because he arrives with confidence. We will train together this week.

Nadal recently partnered with Casper Ruud to play in the men’s doubles at Bastad. They managed to reach the semifinals before they had to withdraw from the tournament.
