Toni Nadal has claimed that Paris missed a huge opportunity to establish a great reputation for itself at the Olympics opening ceremony. The ceremony took place on July 26th but received a lot of backlash across different news platforms.

Nadal, Felix Auger-Aliassime‘s current tennis coach, claimed that despite the negative feedback, the opening ceremony had many highlights for fans to cherish. The Spaniard hopes for a good end to the historic Olympic event.

The echoes of the opening ceremony, not without controversy, of the Olympic Games have now died down, where, in my personal opinion and beyond the possible offenses that were expressed, Paris missed the opportunity to claim the well-deserved status for which it has been recognized and admired for many years: class, elegance and good taste.
Toni Nadal said in his column for the Spanish daily El Pais

One of the standout stories, as far as Toni is concerned, was the spotlight given to his nephew, Rafael Nadal. The 22-time Grand Slam champion has a massive reputation in Paris, a city where he has won 14 Roland Garros titles.

During the Olympic ceremony, Rafa was given the Olympic torch by soccer legend Zinedine Zidane. The 38-year-old eventually shared it with American tennis legend Serena Williams as both tennis icons carried it on the boat with the rain pouring down.

Highlighting some of the controversies at the Paris Olympics

Previous Olympic Games have often faced controversy, and this year’s events are no different. From gender debates to disputed victories, there have been many heated discussions. One major incident involves British swimmer Adam Peaty, who accused some swimmers of cheating after China’s victory in the medley relay. Two Chinese swimmers, including Qin Haiyang, were found to have tested positive for banned substances before the Tokyo Olympics. This revelation came to light through a New York Times investigation.

Another controversy surrounds Steven van de Velde, a Dutch beach volleyball player. He was sentenced to prison in 2016 for raping a 12-year-old girl. Despite this, he was included in the Netherlands team for the Paris Olympics. This decision has been widely criticized, and van de Velde is staying in a secret location instead of the athletes’ village.

Algerian boxer Imane Khelif was involved in a controversial match against Italian fighter Angela Carini. Carini withdrew less than a minute into the bout, claiming she was in severe pain from a punch. This incident went viral, drawing comments from celebrities like YouTuber Logan Paul. Despite ongoing questions about Khelif’s gender, it has been confirmed that she was born a woman and has always competed in women’s boxing categories.

Lastly, water quality in the River Seine has raised concerns. Triathlon training was canceled twice due to high levels of sewage in the water. A Belgian athlete had to pull out of the triathlon after reportedly contracting E.coli, though it is not confirmed if it was from swimming in the Seine. This situation has caused significant worry about water safety ahead of the Paris Olympics.
