Rafael Nadal will arrive in Madrid today, undergo PCR tests
The Madrid Masters will begin next week, but the organizers are being ultra-cautious in managing and conducting the event, owing to the ongoing pandemic.
Yesterday, the tournament director, Feliciano Lopez announced that Players who got vaccinated or who have antibodies after having Covid-19 will get a different treatment compared to the other players in Madrid. There is a list of players who will not be tested.
Currently, there aren’t many players on both sides (ATP & WTA) who have taken the vaccine. Therefore, it remains to be seen what arrangements the organizing committee will have in place. In addition, another announcement has come through on the prize money front. The Madrid winner will get €315,000. That’s a 73% reduction compared to 2019 when the winner got €1.2 million.
Five time winner in Madrid will get PCR tests done
Meanwhile, World No.2, Rafael Nadal who is fresh from his win in Barcelona last week, will arrive in the Spanish capital today. Upon arrival, the 20-time Grand Slam champion will get a PCR testing, and will stay at the hotel reserved for the seeded players. He will then head to practice. The Spaniard has won the Madrid Masters five times.
The World No.1, Novak Djokovic has already withdrawn from the event, which will automatically make Nadal the top seed in Madrid. World No.3, Danill Medvedev will also make his return in Madrid after missing out in Barcelona and Monte Carlo.
