Following the suspension of the Indian Premier League (IPL 2021) due to the COVID-19 pandemic breaching the teams’ bio-bubbles, all attention for India shifts to the upcoming Test season consisting of as many as six matches. It begins with the final of the World Test Championship (WTC) against New Zealand in Southampton before a five-match Test series against England in the same country.

The Indian Test side has been in terrific nick in recent times. They clinched a famous series win in Australia against all odds as they braved a humiliating defeat in the first match, the loss of their skipper to paternity leave and a plethora of injuries, to come up trumps in unprecedented fashion. Following the series, England were defeated with ease thanks to excellent bowling displays despite a loss in the first match.

Off the back of these series wins and the form of their players, India would fancy their chances of continuing the good run, but the conditions in England would be far from ideal and they would have to adapt to emerge victorious.

Former Indian captain Rahul Dravid who was the last skipper to win a series for India in England (in 2007), spoke at a webinar organized by Live Aid India about India’s upcoming Test season and predicted that they would be successful.

“I really do think India have a very good chance this time. There’s no question about their [England’s] bowling. Whatever bowling attack England put on the park, especially their seam-bowling attack, is going to be fantastic. They have a lot of players to pick and choose from and that’s going to be terrific,” Dravid said.

“But I just think India will be well-prepared, have the confidence from Australia, there’s lot of belief in the squad. A couple of players have been to England a few times, there’s a lot of experience in the batting order this time around, so this is probably our best chance, maybe say 3-2 to India,” he added.

Speaking of India’s squad that was announced two days ago, Dravid said, “It does [seem balanced]. It’s a 20-member squad. The only [other] one who could have merited selection would’ve been Kuldeep [Yadav], but he’s fallen away over the last little bit. Also, with the kind of [recent] performances from Axar [Patel], [Ravindra] Jadeja and Washington [Sundar], they’re clear about the kind of balance they want in the squad.”

The WTC final begins on the 18th of June while the first Test against England begins on the fourth of August.
