Once the final game of the NFL season played out, fans braced for the wave of dismissals that would follow. The teams at the bottom end of the league were expected to make some announcements and the earlier today, the Las Vegas Raiders have let go of Antonio Pierce.
Pierce was the official head coach for one full year, and he could only manage to get the Raiders to a dismal 4-13 record. Such records do not necessarily bring an end to a coach’s run. However, several factors played in to the situation that saw him end his term early.
The 46-year-old was a highly respected individual as a linebackers coach for the Raiders. When he was promoted to the interim role, he managed to galvanize the team to a 5-4 record. That led to some players such as Maxx Crosby openly declare their interest in seeing Pierce get the job full time.
Antonio Pierce ended up becoming their head coach and started out to a 2-2 record. Then it started to unravel as the team went on a horrible 10-game losing streak. That losing streak saw the same players start to lose faith in Pierce.

One of the reasons could be that he openly declared that his team were one of the worst in the league. Many felt he undermined his own players, and the HC came under a lot of flak. They won two more games against fellow bottom rankers, but it seems the writing was on the wall.
Fans thrash Raiders for rash decision to fire Antonio Pierce
However, football fans noted something that suggested the same Las Vegas Raiders gave their previous head coach Josh McDaniels more than one full season as head coach before they fired him. Therefore, fans feel Antonio Pierce did not get enough time to show his abilities as a HC.
Along with that, the New England Patriots let go of Jerod Mayo after just one year. Fans taking to social media indicated a race-based problem where franchises were not giving Black personnel enough time which they would to White personnel. Check out examples of those reactions below.

2 first year coaches fired now …I’m not saying the league has a short leash for black coaches but the league has a short leash for black coaches and it starts with ownership.

Eburflus gets a pass for 3-14 in year 1, Dan Campbell gets a pass for 3-13-1 in year 1, Jonathan Gannon gets a pass for 4-13 in year 1, the list goes on.. mayo and Pierce canned after 1 year. Maybe Brian Flores had a point

If you're a black assistant coach in the league, don't take the job, it's not worth the headache, the hypocrisy of waiting literally ten yrs plus, to be fired knowing when they hired you, you had no chance…

But, on the other hand, take like the Giants HC, he keeps his job, and…
Another Rooney Rule failure.

Football fans have also noted how the Tennessee Titans let go of GM Ran Carthon, who is Black. On the other hand, they kept head coach Brian Callahan, a White coach, despite finishing with the worst record in the league.
Even though franchises can give football-based arguments, these recent dismissals are giving them other ideas. ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith also subtly hinted at racial bias playing its hand as Black personnel lose top jobs in the league.
