Austria may have been knocked out from the 2024 Euros. However, in the four matches they played in Germany, Ralf Rangnick‘s men put up a show for the ages. After topping a group consisting of France, Poland and the Netherlands, Turkey were next in line for Austria.
Despite a monumental effort from their forwards, Turkey scraped past by two goals to one in the Round of 16. Following their loss, manager Ralf Rangnick made an earnest admission to the press, which has seemingly gone viral on social media.
Our games were very entertaining including today's game. We played four entertaining and intense games. I've seen other games where it was difficult to even stay awake.Ralf Rangnick said in a press conference
Adding to his assessment of the game, the former Manchester United boss claimed that his side could’ve played a few passes differently and ensured the win against Turkey. That being said, Austria go out as one of the biggest surprises at the Euros.
With multiple games ending in 1-1 draws in the group stages, it isn’t difficult to see why Rangnick made such a comment.
Arda Guler’s ‘bold’ gesture towards ‘hostile’ Austrian fans goes viral
Fans were witness to some of the most fast-paced and end-to-end football at the Euros during Austria vs. Turkey on Tuesday night. Ralf Rangnick’s men were forced to accept defeat at the hands of Turkey after Merih Demiral scored a brace to hand his side the win. Real Madrid starlet Arda Guler did not disappoint as he played a central role in his side’s win over Austria.
The teenager ran the show in midfield, setting up multiple chances and threading through balls constantly to his teammates. The opposition crowd made their hostility felt towards the player as he went up to take a corner in the second half. The 19-year-old turned heads when he refused to back down in front of the crowd, and instead chose to cup his ears after the corner went in.
To make the moment even more sweeter, his corner led to Turkey’s second goal of the game. Demiral met his in-swinging corner with a leaping header that made its way into the net despite Patrick Pentz getting a hand to it. Guler and co. will have a gargantuan task at their hands as they face the Netherlands in the quarter finals.
