A rampant Barcelona side puts 6 past hapless Sociedad to celebrate Messi’s record breaking night
FC Barcelona win 6-1 against Real Sociedad in La Liga
FC Barcelona celebrates Lionel Messi’s record breaking 768th appearance for Barcelona with a 6-1 rout of Real Sociedad in La Liga. Messi himself scored a brace and set up Sergino Dest’s first goal in a Barcelona shirt to cap off a memorable night.
A brace for right-back Dest, Messi and goals from Dembele and Griezmann gave impetus to Barcelona’s league title chase. They are currently 4 points behind Atletico Madrid and 2 points above rivals Real Madrid in the La Liga table.
Lionel Messi broke Xavi’s record of 767 appearances for Barcelona
Griezmann started Barcelona’s epic night when he scored against his old team in the 36th minute after Dembele’s effort was saved by the Sociedad keeper. Sergino Dest doubled Barcelona’s lead 7 minutes later as he scored his first goal for Barcelona receiving a delightful pass from Lionel Messi inside the penalty box.
With a 2 goal cushion at half-time Barcelona did not let their intensity drop in the second half and made Real Sociedad pay for their mistakes at the back. Dest doubled his goal tally for Barcelona as he scored early in the 2nd half.
Lionel Messi joined in on the act to score from a wonderful chip through from Busquets. The midfielder spotted Messi’s run through the middle as the Argentine showed impeccable control with his first touch to score Barcelona’s 4th goal.
Dembele struck his side’s fifth goal of the night in the 71st minute after a brilliant solo run. Real Sociedad’s Ander Barrenetxea hit arguably the best goal of the game to reduce the deficit to 4 goals and gave his side a rare moment of joy.
Messi, however, had the final say, finishing off a flowing team move in the 89th minute to score his 23rd league goal of the season, increasing his lead at the top of the scoring charts. Lionel Messi is now 4 goals clear at the top of the Pichichi race ahead of 2nd placed Luis Suarez who has 19 goals so far.
Barcelona will now enjoy a 2 week break as the European international break beckons. They are now a side that looks hungry and ready to win the La Liga title this season if given the chance.
