The Los Angeles Rams had a brutal week. The Rams lost their conference seed status after an overtime loss to the arch-rivals Seattle Seahawks in a Thursday Night thriller. Amid the heart-wrenching 37-38 OT loss, their star receiver Puka Nacua has been the star of the gossip mags and yellow papers for all the wrong reasons.

Nacua recently drew attention after appearing on a livestream with polarizing internet personality Adin Ross. During the broadcast, he went on a lengthy rant criticizing NFL officials, voicing strong frustration with their decision-making. He even made staggering claims that he would celebrate a touchdown with a dance that turned out to be an antisemitic gesture.

Following Thursday’s loss, that frustration did not subside. Nacua reiterated his contempt for the referees in a post on X: “Can you say I was wrong. Appreciate you stripes for your contribution. Lol.” The post was later deleted.

When the reporter brought up the tweet, McVay immediately shut the line of questioning down. After the reporter clarified that Nacua had posted on social media, McVay remained dismissive and pressed back.

Before the reporter could finish explaining, McVay cut him off, saying he couldn’t answer questions about something he hadn’t seen or wasn’t aware of. When asked about a follow-up regarding whether he had an issue with players expressing frustration publicly, McVay again declined to comment, stressing that he needed more information before offering an opinion.

Despite being at the centre of the booming noise, Puka Nacua was nothing but distracted. He put out a strong performance against the Seahawks, and the Rams HC was quick to point that out when asked whether Nacua seemed distracted at a later point of the conference.

No, it wasn’t a distraction at all. Did you think his play showed that he was distracted? I didn’t think so either. He went off today.

Nacua tallied 12 catches, 225 yards, and two touchdowns. He played a role in the touchdown that put the Rams ahead in overtime before Sam Darnold led a game-winning drive and successfully converted a two-point conversion to take the game.

The head coach later added a more profound statement to back up Nacua and the Rams men. He admitted that Nacua’s reaction stemmed from a deep disappointment in coming in short despite investing so much effort and passion.

However, McVay didn’t excuse his behaviour and held that these are the times to show professionalism and dignity. He added that he has his trust in Nacua’s personality and character, and he will guide Nacua to grow and mature as the league and his time with him progresses. Since then, the league has fined the young receiver $25,000 for his postgame remarks.

The Los Angeles Rams drop to fifth seed following late loss to the Hawks

The Seahawks ripped the game from the Rams with their sharp talons and flew away with a win, and clinched a playoff spot. The Seattle Seahawks also moved up to first place in the NFC, positioning themselves for home game advantage throughout the postseason except the Super Bowl.

The Seahawks are in control of their destiny as the conference seed and the division leader. The Hawks last won the division in 2020 when they went 12-4 ahead of the Rams, who were a wild card entry with 10 wins in the season. Later, the Rams avenged their title loss by eliminating the Seahawks from the postseason, handing them their first home playoff loss in the Russell Wilson/Pete Carroll era.

The Rams now have barely 20% chance to top the conference, less than the San Francisco 49ers. They have moved to the fifth spot, despite a higher record compared to the other division leaders. And it’s not ideal. Top seeds clearly have held an advantage since the league shifted to its current divisional playoff format in 2002.

Of the 46 teams that earned the No. 1 seed, 24 went on to reach the Super Bowl. Meanwhile, only four wild-card teams managed to make it that far over the same period. After all, the conference seeds play one game less.

The Seahawks’ own history reflects that trend. Seattle has secured the No. 1 seed three times in franchise history, in 2005, 2013, and 2014, and on each of those occasions, the team advanced all the way to the Super Bowl. And they won the league in 2013, defeating the Denver Broncos in the national championship.
