Randy Orton picked up exactly where he left off on last week’s SmackDown in his dastardly assault of Cody Rhodes. And it was Matt Cardona‘s turn this week. But how did the latter get into Orton’s crosshairs all of a sudden?
The erstwhile Zack Ryder had a backstage confrontation with the 14-time world champion. Cardona felt disgusted by Orton’s callous ambush of someone the latter has time and again claimed he loved like his brother.
‘The Apex Predator’ wasn’t having Cardona questioning his actions and eventually snapped on the ‘Deathmatch King’. Orton mocked Cardona by asking him to go play with his action figures before calling him a mark and indie nerd. ‘The Viper’ took out the former Hype Bros member with an elbow before truly exiting the scene. Cardona consequently demanded a match with Orton, so he went to Nick Aldis.
The SmackDown GM informed the New Yorker that it wasn’t going to happen this week, as Aldis was already dealing with a lot, especially with Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu brawling all over the place. Randy Orton later ran into Jelly Roll and apologized to the singer-rapper for shoving him to the floor while he was in the midst of brutalizing Cody Rhodes.
The three-time Grammy-winning artist expressed concerns about his friend Orton resorting to his evil ways that he fought his entire career to get out of. Roll reminded ‘The Legend Killer’ how great of a husband and a father he’s been. The Tennessee-born musician also brought up that the 45-year-old wrestling veteran had his back at last year’s SummerSlam, and that to Roll was a man having a beautiful soul.
Orton finally admitted that his treatment of Cardona a little while ago was out of line and he embraced Roll. Just before Orton was about to head to the ring, he received a phone call and told the caller he was glad he picked up. The third-generation wrestler said that the other person was right, so he’d go fix it right away. After making his entrance, Orton called out Matt Cardona to issue a public apology.
The former Evolution member admitted that he’s been out of his head these past few weeks and therefore said sorry to the ‘Long Island Iced-Z’ for what transpired between them earlier in the night. Orton said he also has to apologize to Rhodes next week, but he first needed Cardona to forgive him. Cardona was baited into a hug by Orton, who low-blowed ‘The Indie God’ and dropped him with an RKO.
‘The Viper’ sent Cardona to the outside and brought the steel steps, probably with the intention of emulating what he did to Rhodes last Friday. But Orton pumped the brakes after being swarmed by WWE officials and some referees trying to talk some sense into him. It didn’t take long before the ‘Apex Predator’ changed his mind once again and put Cardona back inside the ring to hammer him with a series of punches.
The son of “Cowboy” Bob Orton put Cardona’s left arm through a steel chair and ultimately stomped on it to ‘Pillmanize’ it. The fans were going nuts with chants of “One more time.” However, they didn’t get a repeat of what they were asking, as Orton was firmly held back by security this time around.
This version of Randy Orton chasing his 15th world title has given the WrestleMania 42 season the shot in the arm it desperately needed.
Sami Zayn comments on Randy Orton viciously attacking Cody Rhodes last week
During this week’s SmackDown, Sami Zayn lent his thoughts on Cody Rhodes getting a crimson mask courtesy of Randy Orton. ‘The Underdog from the Underground’ gave Rhodes props for going the extra mile in sticking to his values and playing by the book every single time. Zayn underscored how the ‘American Nightmare’ always puts the fans as a priority and does things that will make them happy.

But what did all that give him in return? The entire world saw the ‘QB1’ leaving SmackDown as a bloody mess last Friday. On the other hand, the former ‘Honorary Uce’ pointed out how the night ended quite differently for Randy Orton, whom Zayn said he looked up to. ‘The Viper’ had the WWE title around his waist after stooping to the lows he did. Zayn couldn’t figure out what should be made out of that.

“You could say a lot about Cody, and I have said a lot to Cody. To his face. But the one thing you have to give him is he tries. He tries to be good. He really, really does. He goes the extra mile in a way that most people don’t even… pic.twitter.com/PExqNyivXg
It had started to dawn upon him that the more he was trying to do things the right way, they were not working out for him. The Canuck has had some rough interactions with Cody Rhodes over the past month or so, each of which resulted in Zayn venting his spleen.
Randy Orton told Sami Zayn on SmackDown after the Elimination Chamber that he believed he could be a world champion in WWE. But for that, Zayn needed to start listening to the voices in his head.
