WWE deciding to let Randy Orton win this year’s Elimination Chamber match was an unexpected call but a rather welcoming one for the fans. ‘The Apex Predator’ smelled blood when Cody Rhodes got carried away in the moment where he and Orton teamed up to take Drew McIntyre out of the equation.

Orton, without the slightest ounce of hesitation, dropped Rhodes with the RKO and earned an Undisputed WWE title match in the main event of WrestleMania. As things stand, it’s Orton vs. McIntyre for the WWE Championship at WrestleMania.

However, it’s subject to the outcome of the Scot’s upcoming title defense against Rhodes on this week’s SmackDown. And that’s where Sam Roberts enters the picture with his tempting layup for what should be the ideal WWE title match at the ‘Grandest Stage of Them All’.

On his Notsam Wrestling podcast, the WWE analyst pushed for Orton vs. Rhodes as a singles match for the Undisputed WWE title. But it’d take a little course correction to get there. First of all, ‘The American Nightmare’ would need to take the title off McIntyre this Friday with Jacob Fatu‘s interference.

‘The Samoan Werewolf’ costing ‘The Scottish Psychopath’ the gold could easily be turned into a massive grudge match between them at WrestleMania.

It’d declutter the WWE title picture so as to give Orton and Rhodes enough real estate to knit a personal and more focused rivalry. Sam Roberts said he’d end night one of WrestleMania 42 with ‘The QB1’ retaining the WWE title over his mentor-cum-friend and turning heel in the process. Roberts also explained some motivations that Rhodes could use to justify his bad guy arc.

There’s a huge sentimental luxury with Randy Orton, as he’s already a 14-time world champion and might very well be the only wrestler to have a real shot of not only tying John Cena‘s record of 17 world title reigns but also getting past it.

This is expected to have the fans backing Orton up against Rhodes on the road to WrestleMania. It’d naturally ruffle ‘The Prodigal Son’ from the inside to a point that he might start reeking of arrogance, leading to him receiving boos in the process.

The former AEW EVP would oppose Orton from getting to his fifteenth world title in WWE, and the fans turning their backs on ‘The Quarterback of WWE’ would, story wise, force Rhodes to take it personally, knowing so well that he was the top babyface in the company since returning at WrestleMania 38.

Randy Orton says he decided to drop Cody Rhodes with the RKO in a heartbeat at the Elimination Chamber

Does Randy Orton have any regrets about the way he won the Elimination Chamber match by dropping his great friend Cody Rhodes with an RKO? ‘The Apex Predator’ was asked the same question afterwards, and his response could be heard below.

Orton said he didn’t hate the fact that he seized his moment by striking Rhodes with the three most dangerous letters in sports entertainment, even when ‘The American Nightmare’ was in a compromised position after having just taken out Drew McIntyre.

The former AEW star would’ve only gotten a split second to figure out his next move, which he couldn’t do as ‘The Apex Predator’ decided in a heartbeat to plant the erstwhile Stardust with the RKO. The stars are starting to align for these former Legacy stablemates to indulge in a full-blown feud heading into WrestleMania 42.

As already discussed above, it remains to be seen if WWE decides to run Orton vs. Rhodes at WrestleMania in Las Vegas instead of a multi-man contest with Drew McIntyre and Jacob Fatu also in the mix. Another interesting aspect to keep an eye on is the recent interactions that ‘The Viper’ has had with Aleister Black.

In fact, Black scored a pinfall win over Orton on the 2/20 edition of SmackDown. ‘The Striking Man from Amsterdam’ has since maintained his focus on ‘The Legend Killer’, who told Black that he’ll come after him after the Elimination Chamber. The former NXT Champion has been rallying to evoke that vicious side of Orton which the fans haven’t seen in a long time.
