Rangers manager Steven Gerrard urges UEFA to quickly investigate and deal with racial abuse allegations of Glen Kamara against Slavia Prague player

Rangers hosted Slavia Prague at the Ibrox Stadium yesterday night and were beaten by 2-0 to lose on aggregate of 3-1. The former was reduced to 9 men in the second half after substitute Kemar Roofe picked up a straight red for a high boot challenge while Leon Balogun was given two yellow cards. All in all it was a night of frustration for Steven Gerrard’s men, which was amplified by the racial abuse of Glen Kamara.

Glen Kamara accuses Slavia Prague player Ondrej Kudela of racially abusing him

Rangers captain Connor Goldson (C) had to get involved in a fight between his teammate Glen Kamara (L) and Ondrej Kudela (No.15)

While it isn’t known just what words the Slavia Prague player used, it was enough to set off a tense few minutes after full time. There was an altercation after the whistle was blown for full time and Rangers captain Connor Goldson remonstrated with Ondrej Kudela. Glen Kamara had to be dragged down the tunnel after this incident and Steven Gerrard said that his players had heard Kudela abusing Kamara. He said that he was standing ‘toe-to-toe’ with Kamara in this issue and will fully support him.

Gerrard had also asked captain Goldson if he wanted to march the players off the pitch, but the latter declined it. However tempers flared after the final whistle and there were accusations that Kudela was beaten up in the tunnel with fists. The Scotland Police got involved and had to escort the Czech Republic team. UEFA was notified of this issue and immediately began their investigation after full time.

Gerrard urged the UEFA officials to conduct a proper investigation and punish Kudela for his racial abuse of Kamara. Racism has been a prevalent issue the whole of this season, with Paris Saint-Germain and Istanbul Basaksehir players walking out of the pitch after Demba Ba accused of racial abuse by a 4th official.
