It has been a difficult season for Trae Young and the Atlanta Hawks. But Young’s era in Atlanta has come to an end in his eighth season, as he has been traded to the Washington Wizards in exchange for CJ McCollum and Corey Kispert. The Hawks have gone through ups and downs this year. Heading into Wednesday’s fixture, the Hawks had won just two of their previous 11 games and had just suffered back-to-back losses to the Toronto Raptors.

With the drama surrounding Trae Young out of the way before tip-off, the Hawks registered a convincing 117-100 victory over the New Orleans Pelicans at the State Farm Arena. The Pelicans were dealing with a lot of issues themselves, and the loss on Wednesday extended their losing streak to nine games, the second-longest in the league at the moment, behind the Indiana Pacers.

The win was just the seventh in 18 home games for the Hawks, highlighting their poor home performances this season. However, it was a much-needed win for a team that has been on the decline in recent weeks, as the win propelled them to ninth in the Eastern Conference standings with an 18-21 record.

The Hawks did not offer Young a supermax contract in the offseason, which definitely played a role in Young’s subpar performances this season. The guard was averaging just 19.3 points, 1.5 rebounds and 8.9 assists. It is his lowest points-per-game since his rookie year.

After Young’s departure, the Hawks will be looking to rebuild around their new face of the franchise, Jalen Johnson, who has been their best player in Young’s absence and has even earned praises from LeBron James. It is an unfortunate ending for Young in Atlanta, who has featured in just ten games this season and was also involved in a scuffle against the Chicago Bulls a couple of weeks ago.

The NBA saw its first trade one month before the trade deadline. American rapper Lil Boosie was in attendance for the Hawks-Pelicans game and was surprised when the announcement of Young’s trade was made just before tip-off. His reaction was quick to go viral on social media. Boosie said:

They just traded Trae, man. He down there dribbling the basketball with his clothes on. Damn.

It is a huge fall from grace for Young as this scenario would have been unimaginable four years ago. Young missed the first few games of the season, and the Hawks flourished without him. To make matters worse for the 27-year-old, their poor run of results coincided with his return. While the contract issue may have played a role in Young’s subpar performances, it also showed the Hawks that it may be time to move on from him.

While the trade was imminent, as it was reported that Young’s agents were in talks with the franchise to work on his departure. The timing of the announcement and Boosie’s reaction went viral, and the internet was quick to respond on social media.

Luka Doncic reacts to Trae Young’s trade

Young was selected as the fifth overall pick by the Dallas Mavericks in 2018 but was traded to the Hawks in exchange for Luka Doncic. Since then, the 27-year-old has earned four All-Star selections and took the Hawks to their first Eastern Conference Finals in 2021, while Doncic has five All-Star selections and has been to the NBA Finals in 2024 with the Mavs.

Following the Lakers’ loss to the San Antonio Spurs, Doncic was asked about Young’s trade from the Hawks.

Obviously, we came together, we got traded for each other. There’s been a lot of talk about me and him, but we have a good relationship. I have a lot of respect for him. So if he’s excited for this new journey, I’m excited for him.

The two players’ careers have been intertwined since draft night 2018. A lot has changed since, with Doncic being traded to the Los Angeles Lakers in the middle of last season, while Young will be starting a new life with the Wizards.
