  • Fans express disappointment on social media over the lack of consequences for Rice amid his past legal issues.

Rashee Rice avoids long-term consequences in the case involving allegations of assaulting his former girlfriend after an NFL investigation. The Kansas City Chiefs’ wide receiver can now head into the offseason without worrying about further legal trouble.

In January 2026, Dacoda Jones, Rice’s former girlfriend, posted disturbing photos on social media, accusing the 25-year-old wideout of assault. A month later, she filed a lawsuit in Dallas County for domestic violence allegations.

According to the lawsuit, Rice strangled Jones when they were together in 2023. By December, his behavior had escalated so much that she felt she had no choice but to end the relationship. She claimed that Rice grabbed her forcefully, choked her, scratched her, and hit her, leaving scratches across her body, including on her face.

The timing of the lawsuit worked against Rice. He missed the first six games of the 2025-26 season due to his involvement in a hit-and-run case from 2024.

Well, there’s finally some good news for Rice. On Friday, April 3, the NFL announced the verdict of its investigation into Jones’ lawsuit. The investigative team didn’t find enough evidence to prove that Rice assaulted Jones.

Adam Schefter of ESPN tweeted,

NFL concluded today that Chiefs WR Rashee Rice has not engaged in conduct that violates the personal conduct policy’ and the investigation into accusations from his former girlfriend is now closed; there will be no discipline at this time.

In a statement to the Associated Press, Rice’s attorney, Sean Lindsey, thanked the NFL for its verdict.

Mr. Rice wants to thank the NFL for their thorough investigation, and looks forward to the start of the 2026-27 NFL season.

The football community on X struggled to accept that the NFL did not find Rice guilty. Given his past legal issues, many thought the SMU graduate was headed for serious trouble. When that turned out not to be the case, they were disappointed.

This verdict couldn’t have come at a better time. With Rice now in the clear, the Chiefs can shift their focus to targeting a defensive player in the first round rather than looking for his replacement.

The Chiefs own the 9th overall pick and are expected to select Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. Despite Bain’s clear lack of arm length, he seems the perfect fit beside George Karlaftis and Drue Tranquill in the middle of the park for the Chiefs. Former NFL defensive tackle Gerald McCoy believes that Bain will thrive under the guidance of Chiefs defensive line coach Joe Cullen.

Reuben Bain will be just fine with the right coaches. The statement I made about coaches worried about it is because they don’t know how to coach it. Send him to Joe Cullen and guarantee he’ll be all-pro. BUT everybody ain’t Joe Cullen.

McCoy tweeted

As for Rice, he needs to return to his very best in order to shake off the label of a troublemaker. Since entering the league in 2023, he has accumulated 156 receptions for 571 yards and scored 14 touchdowns in 28 appearances. He clearly is Patrick Mahomes‘ number one target other than tight end Travis Kelce.
