2024 hasn’t been a great year for kickers, and Justin Tucker is no different. The veteran missed two field goals when the Baltimore Ravens played the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday.

The Ravens went on to lose the game by just two points and lost ground in the division. Later, reporters asked Tucker the reason behind the two misses; he blamed the turf.

[The turf] it wasn’t ideal. That’s something that we make it a point to account for by going out there in pre-game warmups and getting our feet under us, figuring out what the wind may be doing.

Justin Tucker said post-game

He was dubbed the most accurate kicker because he dispatched consecutive 50+ yard field goals regularly. Many thought blaming the turf was just an excuse for his part to siphon away some of the responsibilities of the two misses. However, Steelers kicker Chris Boswell scored all six of his tries and was asked if Tucker has started to regress over time.

No, not even close. That dude’s a legend. He’s a Hall of Famer and next thing you know, he’ll go on another 100-field-goals-[made] streak and everyone will forget about this.

Chris Boswell said

Regardless of how highly Boswell thinks of Tucker, the five-time All-Pro has missed six kicks already this season, and there are still seven more games left.

Justin Tucker promises to make amends in future games

There are seven games until the season concludes, and the Ravens will stick with the kicker who has a track record of scoring from 66 yards. Yes, he hasn’t been the same since the 2023 AFC Championship game, but that doesn’t mean he can’t improve on it.

I’m still confident I’m going to go out there and nail every single kick. Part of the way we stay confident is by continuing to work and trust the process.

Tucker isn’t the only kicker who has come under much scrutiny this year. San Francisco 49ers Jake Moody got punched in the side of his face by his own teammate for frequently missing field goals. The New York Jets benched veteran Greg Zuerlein and still haven’t settled on a kicker as of yet after losing Spencer Shrader to the Chiefs, who replaced Harrison Butker because he’s injured.

In the merry-go-round of kicker misery, Panthers Eddy Pineiro has become the most accurate kicker in the NFL, even though his team has only won three games all season.
