It was a busy day in office for two of India’s most talented all-rounders, Ravindra Jadeja and Ravichandran Ashwin who fought back brilliantly after a shaky start for the hosts. On the first day of the opening Test match of the two-game series, India were in a serious spot of bother as they were reduced to 144/6. Following which, an unbeaten stand of 195 runs saw India through to a comfortable position, spearheaded by Ashwin who was unbeaten for 102 at the end of the day while Jadeja stayed not out for 86.

In the herculean knock carved by the seasoned Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin registered a couple of impressive feats for himself. He came up to the second position in terms of centuries scored while coming out to bat at number eight or below. With four centuries in his tally while batting at number eight or beneath, he is one adrift of former New Zealand captain, Daniel Vettori who has five to his name.

The two other names on the list is that of Pakistan wicket-keeper, Kamran Akmal and West Indies all-rounder, Jason Holder. They were on level pegging with Ashwin with three centuries after the mentioned number eight or below until today. Ashwin’s marvellous knock of resilience saw him edge past the other two and come in close vicinity to Vettori with still a handful of games ahead of him to follow.

India was jolted to a rude awakening after they lost three of their top-order batters, Rohit Sharma (6), Shubman Gill (0) and Virat Kohli (6) with the scorecard reading a paltry 34. Yashasvi Jaiswal (56) and Rishabh Pant (39) came up with the initial repair work. However, three quick blows clinching the above two alongside a struggling KL Rahul (16) pushed India to the backfoot again. It was then that Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja dropped anchors and eventually saw India through to a comfortable position.

Ravichandran Ashwin became fifth individual to score multiple centuries and claim more than one fifer in a single venue

Ravichandran Ashwin who at one point in time wanted to quit cricket because of an altercation with his father, has now established himself as one of the best off-spinners in Test cricket. Apart from his aforementioned record, he climbed up into another list of elites in Test cricket. Being the all-rounder that he is, Ash joined the catalogue of scoring more than a century and bagging multiple fifers in a single venue in the whites.

Ashwin has two centuries and four fifers in MA Chidambaram Stadium which is also his home ground. Apart from him, the other members in the list include Ian Botham (two centuries and three fifers in Headingley), Chris Cairns (two centuries and two fifers in Auckland), Kapil Dev (two centuries and two fifers in MA Chidambaram), and Sir Garfield Sobers who has two hundreds and two fifers in Headingley.

India will be resuming action tomorrow at the score of 339/6. This is the first of the ten Tests which will be played in the next ten months by Rohit Sharma and company, featuring opponents like Bangladesh, New Zealand and Australia. The last Test series for India in the ongoing WTC cycle will be against Australia where India will travel Down Under to play five Test matches instead of the usual four which is a part of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.
