Team India suffered a 2-0 defeat at the hands of Sri Lanka in the recently concluded ODI series. The Indian batters performed very poorly against Sri Lanka’s spin-bowling threat. No one expected the Indian team to go down easily against Sri Lanka.
The only silver lining was captain Rohit Sharma. He continued with his approach from the ODI World Cup and was sensational yet again in this series. Spinner Ravichandran Ashwin heaped praise on the mentality of Sharma and his batting approach in the ODI series against Sri Lanka.
One thing that stood up for me in the Sri Lanka series was Rohit Sharma's batting once again. No matter what is happening, no fear, Rohit means 'I am going to hit.' As a batter, Rohit is par excellence at this point of time.Ravichandran Ashwin said via his Youtube channel
Sharma was proactive with his batting approach and took the attack to the bowlers during the first ten overs of the powerplay. The success of the T20 World Cup did not translate to the ODI series under Sharma’s captaincy. He was only partly to blame as his teammates struggled to back him up.
Rohit Sharma backed his attacking approach despite getting out with some risky shots
Sharma went all guns blazing right from the start and scored a quick-fire 58 in the first game and a 65 in the second game. However, that aggressive approach came up with certain risks. As soon as Sharma got dismissed with a rash shot, the rest of India’s batting lineup fell down like a pack of cards against the spinners on a slow and turning track.
Sharma, however, defended his approach despite his wickets. The captain said he could get those runs on a tough wicket because he played in that fashion. The Indian captain wants to play in that fashion and also accepts the risk associated with the approach. However, he feels that the fast starts will reduce the pressure on the middle order.
Sharma’s approach worked wonders during the ODI World Cup 2023, as Virat Kohli took responsibility after his wicket and provided stability in the middle order. However, in the series against Sri Lanka, Kohli, KL Rahul, and Shreyas Iyer could not stitch together partnerships. Hence India crumbled despite Sharma’s impressive start.
It is pretty clear that the Indian captain will keep on batting in the same fashion. Moreover, the team will need to avoid their poor batting form as well to succeed. The Indian team has no more ODIs scheduled in 2024. They will play 3 ODIs against England in 2025 ahead of The ICC Champions Trophy.
