Virat Kohli, the star Indian batter, has been synonymous with the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) right from the start of the IPL in 2008. He was yet again retained by the franchise ahead of the mega auction for INR 21 crore. The franchise went in and bought some stunning players in the auction, but no one seems to be a worthy captaincy candidate for the team.

The veteran Indian off-spinner, Ravichandran Ashwin, who was bought by Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the mega auction, predicted that Kohli will be the skipper of the side in the upcoming season. He feels that RCB have not gone on to buy a captaincy option in the auction.

So, he feels that unless they appoint someone else, it will be Kohli who will lead the side.

In all likelihood, I think Virat Kohli is going to captain that side. That’s the feeling I get because they haven’t gone for a captain. Unless and until they are going to go with somebody else. I don’t see anyone other than Virat as captain.

Earlier, former Proteas and RCB player, AB de Villiers, also predicted Kohli to be re-appointed as the captain of the team. Kohli stepped down from captaincy ahead of IPL 2022. However, he has now retired from the T20I format after winning the T20 World Cup 2024 and has less workload to manage.

Virat Kohli smashed his 81st international century at the Optus Stadium in Perth

The former Indian captain made a welcome return to form in the first of the five-match Test series against Australia in the BGT 2024/25 at the Optus Stadium in Perth. He smashed his 81st international century and his 30th Test ton in the match.

Kohli had previously scored just two Test centuries in the last five years and hence was under tremendous pressure. This was also his first century since the 2023 ODI World Cup semi-final against New Zealand in Mumbai.

Ashwin felt that RCB had a fantastic auction and made a balanced squad. He said that the franchise played the waiting game, waited till the last and created a formidable team in the auction.

I actually personally think they had a terrific auction. They balanced it and waited it out. Many teams came into this auction with many crores in their purses. They came blazing right in the front but RCB played the waiting game even though they had a lot of money. Who do I need? They are the ones I need. My overall team is important. My 12 or 14 is important.

RCB will be hoping that they get hold of their first IPL title in 2025. They always have had passionate fan support and have fans all over the country. However, they haven’t been able to gift them an IPL title that they so richly deserve.
