The premier stock car arcing series is going through one of the sketchiest times it has ever been through. With the TV ratings going up and down as well as the anti-trust lawsuit that could change the sport as whole, the leadership has a lot of mess to clean on the table. But ex-team owner Ray Evernham believes the sport is still in a good spot.
In his latest interview for Kenny Wallace’s YouTube channel Ray Evernham, who was a crew chief and team owners when the sports were at its peak, shared his thoughts on current state of the sport. He believes it is in the right spot with multiple manufacturers and new young drivers in the pipeline, making it interesting.
My personal feeling is that the overall state of NASCAR is strong. It is good. As long as we have two car manufacturers, we’re always going to race. There’s a ton of young talent that has come into our sport. Lots of good positive things.
Ray Evernham told Kenny Wallace’s YouTube channel.
Further talking about the point, he admitted that there are shortcomings with the sport, but asserted that the positives outweigh the negatives. There are many aspects of the sport that needs to be changed or can be betters, but overall, the growth the industry as a whole is experiencing gives hopes for the future.
I listen to all the sides, and you know, if you said, ‘Hey, put your mediator’s hat on.’ I would tell you, ‘Look, there’s good and bad on both sides of things.’ There are things that I would like to change and see how to make it better, but I do think that they’re trying to do that.

Ray Evernham is planning for the return for IROC
In the same interview Ray Evernham shared his thoughts on the international race of champions series and his plans to resurrect it. He admitted that IROC was abandoned after the racing has whole evolved, making the series irrelevant.

It’s a little bit more difficult than doing the historic cars like we’ve been doing. But the truth is, John, everything evolves, and I think that the sport evolved to a place where there was no place for motorsports entertainment like IROC. There wasn’t.
Ray Evernham said.
Now time has changed, as the racing fans are seeking more nostalgia and that has opened the market yet again for it make a comeback. This is giving him hope that the championship can make a comeback, like how the sport of Golf is evolving.
And now, I think the sport has evolved again, where people are looking back and going, ‘Hey, we really enjoyed that.’ And you know, when you look at the things that are happening in professional golf and people looking at different ways to do things together and put a little bit more excitement, there’s absolutely a possibility.
Ray Evernham added.
The comments from the former race team owners seems rational and hopeful. The fans would love to see the return of iconic events from the past. But Evernham has to make sure he doesn’t overestimate the market and make decision that could ruin the legacy of the IP.
