Real Madrid earn last minute victory against Villarreal but fail to defend La Liga title
Real Madrid emerge victorious against Villarreal
Real Madrid earned a comeback win against Villarreal in the final match of the season in La Liga. However, their 2-1 victory which came in final moments of the match, courtesy of goals from Karim Benzema and Luka Modric wasn’t enough to win them the league title ultimately.
Los Blancos scored twice in the final 5 minutes of the match after going a goal down in the first half through Yeremi pino’s 20th minute strike. A match which could potentially be the last game for a number of current Real Madrid players including their manager Zinedine Zidane ended on bitter-sweet note for the side.
Real Madrid’s 2-1 win was of little significance as Atletico Madrid won their match and the La Liga title
A Real Madrid win would have handed them the title on the final day, if Atletico Madrid dropped points in their match against Real Valladolid. But a Atletico victory meant Real ended up 2nd in the title race.
Chasing a comeback after going down in the 20th minute, Zidane brought on Rodrygo and Isco early on in the 2nd half to give Real more potency up front. The two seemed to have an impact but failed to break down a well oiled Villarreal defence. Villarreal themselves had to win the match to qualify for Europa League next season, but their tendency to fall back hurt them towards the end.
Marcelo, Nacho and Mariano Diaz were all brought on as second half substitutes as Zidane looked for a comeback which would have given Real a glimmer of hope had Atletico failed to win their match against Valladolid.
Real played with much higher intensity in the final 10 minutes than their opponents, and came out trumps as Karim Benzema scored a volley and Luka Modric grabbed the winning goal late on, in a classic counter attack.
The match will probably go down as the final match for players like Marcelo, Isco, Sergio Ramos, and Varane, all of whom are rumoured to be leaving the club this summer.
If at all it is the final match of their careers at Real, they can be very proud of what they have achieved at the club and of their tremendous fighting spirit which they showed till the final minute in this match.
