Real Madrid fans have been left haywire after club forward Vinicius Jr. failed to win the 2024 Ballon d’Or award, coming second behind Manchester City star Rodri. Amid the outburst, fans hilariously attacked American singer Olivia Rodrigo, mistaking her for the Spaniard star.
The Los Blancos were most certain that the 24-year-old Brazilian would clinch the Ballon d’Or award. However, moments before the ceremony, the Real Madrid delegation, including Kylian Mbappe, Vinicius Jr., Jude Bellingham and manager Carlo Ancelotti, cancelled their plans to travel to the award ceremony in Paris.
This was after rumors went rife that the Brazilian had lost out to Euro 2024 winner Rodri. The Man City midfielder, who enjoyed a brilliant season with both club and country, emerged at the top.
Several Real Madrid stars and former players called out the Ballon d’Or organizers’ attitude towards its players, with the club even responding to Vinicius’ loss. It left fans enraged, as they took to social media to label Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win as ‘theft’ and ‘robbery’, while taking a dig at the midfielder, UEFA and France Football.
Some fans, however, lost their way on social media, instead venting out their frustrations on American singer Olivia Rodrigo. Some fans amusingly commented that the singer had ‘robbed Vini’.

Not just Olivia, but Argentinian midfielder and Atletico Madrid star Rodrigo De Paul also had to bear the brunt of the enraged Los Blancos fans. Not just fans, Dutch midfield legend Clarence Seedorf also termed Vinicius’ loss as a ‘disgrace’, while pointing to the issues between Real Madrid and UEFA.
Barcelona dressing room reportedly ‘celebrated’ Rodri’s Ballon d’Or win
Manchester City star Rodri’s 2024 Ballon d’Or win was the second major setback for Real Madrid in a week, after having lost to their arch-rivals Barcelona 4-0 on Saturday. The Los Blancos were rooting for Vinicius Jr. to win the coveted individual award.
Rodri’s win reportedly sparked a celebratory atmosphere in the Barcelona dressing room. This was a result of the special bond that a number of Blaugrana stars share with the midfielder, through the Spanish national team. The Catalan club’s players had already discussed the Spaniard’s victory on Whatsapp and during training, after the results leaked a day before.
When it was confirmed that Rodri would win the Ballon d'Or, the Barcelona players (many of them Spaniards) began to celebrate the midfielder's achievement.

A number of Barca stars were present at the Ballon d’Or ceremony in Paris, including Dani Olmo, Lamine Yamal and Pau Cubarsi. Yamal, the 17-year-old La Masia prodigy, won the 2024 Kopa Trophy for being the best young player of the season, under the age of 21.
