Real Madrid superstar Luka Modric has said that the 2022 FIFA World Cup will be his last international competition for Croatia. One of the finest midfielders in the history of the game is Modric, who turned 37 in September.

Luka Modric led his nation to their first-ever FIFA World Cup final, where they ultimately fell to France 4-2. With two goals and an assist in his final game, Modric earned the FIFA World Cup Golden Ball. Modric won the Ballon d’Or in 2018 as a result of his outstanding performances for Croatia at the FIFA World Cup and Real Madrid’s Champions League victory in 2017–18.

Modric has not demonstrated any signs of slowing down despite being squarely on the wrong side of 30. But Modric revealed that his time playing for Croatia was almost up in a FIFA+ interview.

During a press conference held during Croatia’s Nations League campaign, Modric said he has no plans to retire. He said: “I’m not thinking about that [retirement]. I haven’t made any decisions. I’m focused on the Nations League.

“We have an opportunity to qualify for the last four, then we have the World Cup and then we will see. I’ll try to make the best decision. At that time, I’ll talk with our head coach, with the people I trust. I’m not thinking about that at the moment.”

Along with Spain, Italy, and the Netherlands, Croatia earned a spot in the top four, ensuring their participation in the 2022–23 UEFA Nations League season’s decisive June 2023 match. It would be intriguing to see if Modric decides to wear the armband in the UEFA Nations League for one final time in 2019.
