A newspaper report in Spain on Tuesday

Real Madrid are reportedly willing to consider selling centre-back Raphael Varane to avoid losing him for free in 2022. Raphael Varane’s current contract at Madrid ends in 2022 and a contract extension will be offered to him soon.

The situation regarding club captain Sergio Ramos has taken up most of the headlines at Madrid in the last few weeks. The Los Blancos fear losing another key defender in Varane as reports from his closer sources say he isn’t sure about extending at Madrid.

Real Madrid have almost finalized David Alaba’s arrival at the club. Real Madrid will also want the French World Cup winner to stay at the club but have prepared a back-up plan in case things go south.

Varane has previously expressed a desire to leave the club, and almost did so in 2019. Both Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain held an interest in the defender.

Varane has won 4 Champions league titles at Real Madrid

“I’m going to stay at Madrid,” Varane said, before admitting “everything has to end one day”.

Varane has recently joined forces with agency CAA Sports, who possess a strong presence in the UK. A move to the Premier league in England therefore cannot be ruled out due to the strong English connections.

Spanish news outlet Marca also reports that Real Madrid will be looking for a bid of around €50million (£44m) to let go of Varane. Varane was recently identified as the 3rd most valuable player in Real Madrid behind Casemiro and Courtois. However, Madrid will always prioritize his  contract renewal before attending to the thought of selling him.
