Endrick was lauded by fans for winning a penalty for Real Madrid in the final minutes against Espanyol as Real Madrid won 4-1. However, rival fans did not feel the same as replays suggested that the ball went out of play and that the Brazilian was outside the penalty area when the foul was made. Following the game, fans on social media split into two as debates surrounding the decision took over the internet.

Madrid have scored a total of 13 goals in La Liga this season. As per statistics page StatMuse, Real Madrid have been awarded five penalties in La Liga, the highest for a side in the Spanish top flight. Surprisingly, only 8 penalties have been awarded to the rest of the 19 teams in the competition. Almost 40% of Real’s goals this season have come from the penalty spot.

As for the penalty call itself, Endrick seemed to pick the ball up near the touchline before dribbling past his marker. As he made his way to the penalty area, the youngster was dragged back vigorously, although he chose to remain on his feet.

However, the referee pointed to the spot when he went down on the line. Kylian Mbappe stepped up to take the same and comfortably converted from the spot.

Fans react to Real Madrid’s fifth penalty of the season

Real Madrid are just a point away from rivals FC Barcelona and in second place in La Liga. A fan commented that Madrid are yet to learn how to win games without penalties. Another laughed at how Madrid have bought all the referees in the competition and that it would take a miracle for Barcelona to win the League.

Even though the foul appeared to be outside the box, a few pointed to how the foul carried on till his upper torso was inside the penalty area. A fan defended the high number of penalties by saying that better forwards will ultimately help a side win more penalties. A viral trend mocking Real Madrid for the number of penalties they were awarded were spammed under posts mentioning the same.

Despite the controversy, it is difficult to deny that Real deserved the win for the way they responded to going 1-0 down. Both Rodrygo and Vinicius Jr. combined to score while Dani Carvajal and Mbappe also found the net. Carlo Ancelotti expressed his delight at how his team was getting better with every passing day.
