Real Sociedad pip Athletic Bilbao in Copa del Rey finals

In one of the Spanish domestic competition finals where neither Barcelona nor Real Madrid featured, Real Sociedad pipped their local rivals Atletico Bilbao to win the title. Mikel Oyarzabal scored the solitary goal of the game through penalty which was enough for them to lift the title on Saturday. After the victory, Los Txuri-Urdin will turn their attention towards their La Liga campaign and attain the European qualification for the next season.
Real Sociedad vs Athletic Bilbao: As it happened
Both sides started off with an attacking formation at Stadio Olímpico de la Cartuja. Imanol Alguacil fielded his side in a 4-3-3 formation whereas Athletic Bilbao started with two strikers upfront. Despite fielding two strikers, Athletic Bilbao had only two shots on target out of five they fired on Saturday. On the other hand, Real Sociedad were also not great going forward as they had only one shot on goal which was through penalty. La Real had six shots fired at Atletic Bilbao goalkeeper in the domestic finals.
The finalists started the game with an equal tempo but Real Sociedad started to dominate the possession and proceedings. Athletic Bilbao relied on counter-attacks but failed to get any substantial gain from the counter attacks. The sides went to half-time at 0-0 scoreline.
In the second half, Real Sociedad looked more threatening and loaded the opposition half with their players. As a result of waves of attacks, Atheltic Bilbao defender commited a mistake by felling Portu in the 63rd minute. Mikel Oyarzabal sent the goalkeeper, Unai Simon, in the wrong way and slotted it past him. Athletic Bilbao’s late efforts didn’t yield any substantial results as La Real emerged winners of the title. Mikel Oyarzabal was happy with his team’s performance in the finals. In the post match, he said:
