Travis Kelce finally clarified why he ditched the media following the Kansas City Chiefs’ week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Chargers. The star tight end left early to check on Patrick Mahomes before the medical team did an MRI of his knee.
The Chiefs found themselves in a tight spot after losing two straight games against the Dallas Cowboys and the Houston Texans. It reduced their chances of playing January football to below 20%. As a result, they needed to win all the remaining games to secure a wildcard spot.
Travis Kelce wasn’t in a great spot either. He was coming off a dreadful game in which he caught just one pass for five yards and dropped two catches. A big game was expected from the All-Pro man against the Chargers. He caught 7 passes on 9 targets for 70 yards.
Sadly, Kelce’s effort had little impact on the final result. The Chiefs lost by three points, and to make matters worse, Patrick Mahomes left the game with an injury.
With Mahomes unavailable, reporters searched for Kelce for an interview. However, he declined to do a detailed Q&A session with them for the second consecutive week. According to Jesse Newell of The Athletic, Kelce told the reporters that “It’s not the time. I will catch you guys during the week.”

Travis Kelce shared the reason he chose not to talk to the media following the loss to the Chargers
All the attention shifted to the New Heights podcast, hosted by Kelce and his older brother, Jason Kelce. There were discussions on several different subjects. Kelce reacted to Mahomes’ injury, hinted at his retirement, and set a goal for the rest of the season.

The only subject he omitted was his decision to avoid the media. Fans had to wait two more days to get a definitive answer. Speaking with reporters from the Chiefs’ facility on Friday, Kelce revealed that he left early to check on Mahomes, who was being prepped for an MRI.
Talked to him [Patrick Mahomes] afterwards. It was before the MRI and stuff… That’s why I kind of chose not to speak to the media right after that game.

The MRI results confirmed that Mahomes had suffered an LCL and ACL tear. He was quickly transferred to Dallas, where he underwent surgery. The 3x Super Bowl winner has already begun the rehab process.
Usually, it takes between 9 and 12 months to completely recover from an ACL reconstruction. This makes his return for week one of football next year in question. He will eventually make a comeback, which can’t certainly be said about Kelce.
The 36-year-old is in the final year of his contract. He agreed to play in 2025 because the 2024 season ended with a defeat in the Super Bowl. Unfortunately, the current year turned out to be even worse. The Chiefs can not mathematically qualify for the playoffs, putting an end to an era of dominance by the KC franchise.
The good news is that Kelce is healthy and wants to play the final three games. He stands a chance to cross 1000 yards. Currently, he has 67 receptions for 797 yards and 5 touchdowns.
In week 16, the Chiefs face the 2-12 Tennessee Titans. With Mahomes on the injured reserve, Gardner Minshew is set to deputize at the quarterback spot.
