Since his trade to the Detroit Lions, former No. 1 pick Jared Goff has transformed his career trajectory. The same was expected from the No. 2 overall pick of the same draft class who was part of the Philadelphia Eagles’ only Super Bowl win. However, Carson Wentz, in comparison, nosedived and is now a backup to Patrick Mahomes.
During that Super Bowl winning season, his play was such that many had him leading the MVP race. He was the face of the franchise whose dazzling skills as a mobile pocket passer helped his team go on a nine-game-winning run. However, his ACL injury ruled him out for the rest of the season.
The Eagles eventually won the Super Bowl for the first time in its history after Nick Foles had arguably the greatest game for a backup quarterback. While standing on the podium, Wentz told Foles that it will be his turn next season to drive the team to another Super Bowl.
He tried to fulfill that promise the next season but suffered another injury. After that season, reports came about that Carson Wentz was a locker room problem and wouldn’t listen to coaches. When former teammate Darren Sproles was asked about it, he threw some more light on the subject.

“The thing about Carson he didn’t listen to coaching… he was a good player, but he never reached his peak.”

At the time, many Philadelphia Eagles players refuted those rumors, and Wentz went on to receive a massive contract extension at the time. However, those rumors continued to grow and showed the quarterback in a negative light.
Carson Wentz went from being third best player in the league to backup
Following the Eagles’ 2017-18 Super Bowl win, Carson Wentz was ranked third on the NFL Top 100 list, hailed as a rising superstar. Many viewed him as the superior quarterback from the 2016 draft, choosing him over Jared Goff without hesitation.
The following season, Wentz’s season again stopped before it could finish as he suffered another injury. In the 2019 season, his stellar play netted him a massive contract extension with significant guaranteed money. The thought behind that was that the star QB was going to take strides once healthy.
He had his best chance of doing that, but a concussion in the Wild Card round stopped that run. In the 2020 season, Wentz started to show signs of concern when he led the league in interceptions, turnovers and sacks despite playing only 12 games.
That led to his trade to the Indianapolis Colts, where former OC Frank Reich was HC. But that endeavor lasted one season, and he was on his way to Washington Commanders the following offseason. In the 2023 offseason, the Commanders cut him, and he signed with the Los Angeles Rams.
Another one-year experiment later, he is now the back up to Patrick Mahomes. His lack of humility and ability to listen to coaches has seen him move from one team to another. Now, as a backup, he is still trying to stay relevant.
