On Wednesday, the Boston Red Sox finalized a blockbuster trade with the Chicago White Sox. The American League East side acquired pitcher Garrett Crochet in exchange for four top prospects.

The Red Sox have been in search for top arms this offseason. A few days ago, they added former Chicago Cubs and New York Yankees reliever Aroldis Chapman. The left-handed veteran joined the Red Sox on a one-year $10.75 million deal.

With some big names like Blake Snell and Max Fried off the market, the Red Sox decided to try a hand in trade instead of pursuing top free agents. They gave up four of their prospects in order to bring Crochet to Fenway Park.

In a year where the White Sox went on to establish unwanted MLB records, Crochet was one of the few shining stars for them. In his 32 starts, the southpaw went 6-12 for the season with an ERA of 3.58. Despite these stats, he was named the American League Comeback Player of the Year as he transitioned from a reliever to a starter.

The White Sox will receive catcher Kyle Teel, outfielder Braden Montgomery, infielder Chase Meidroth, and right-hander Wikelman Gonzalez for giving up Crochet. Given the season they had in 2024, the team needed some prospects as they aim to re-build the squad.

Red Sox Chief Baseball Officer Craig Breslow called Crochet a “legitimate number one starter” and expressed excitement while reacting to this move.

We feel like we got a legitimate number one starter in Garrett, left-handed, ton of swing and miss, massive strikeouts, and feels like the best is still in front of him. So we’re excited about what he brings.

A majority of them celebrated this deal. However, just like always there were some jokes and trolls as well. Some fans even questioned the decision of the White Sox to allow him to leave. Meanwhile, one seemingly overjoyed fan wrote, “Sox just got a dawg” while reacting to this development.

The Red Sox have also added a catcher to their roster. The team claimed catcher Carlos Narvaez from the New York Yankees, in exchange for minor league RHP Elmer Rodriguez-Cruz and international bonus pool space. How will this move affect them is something to keep an eye out for.
