The Boston Red Sox finally made a huge move in the offseason on Wednesday. Just days after losing out on 3rd baseman Alex Bregman, the team acquired starting pitcher Ranger Suarez on a 5-year, $130 million deal.
The American League East side had been quiet in the offseason so far, and was the only team that had not signed a major league free agent. This past weekend, they suffered a major blow following the deal of Bregman with the Chicago Cubs.
Bregman, who joined the Red Sox last year on a 3-year, $120 million deal, would opt out of his deal at the end of the 2025 season. After the team were unwilling to offer him a no-trade clause, he ended up signing with the Cubs on a 5-year, $175 million deal.
This left a major hole in the Red Sox lineup. Bregman’s arrival caused some tensions in the locker room as Rafael Devers refused to give up his 3rd base position. In June, the Dominican international was traded to the San Francisco Giants while he was in the 2nd year of his 10-year, $313.5 million deal.
With Devers gone, the Red Sox were hoping for Bregman’s return. Unfortunately, for them, things did not go the way they were hoping for. A few days after this massive incident, the team splashed the cash and brought in Ranger Suarez from free agency on Wednesday.

Suarez was one of the top free-agent pitchers this offseason. In the 2025 season, the southpaw went 12-8 in 26 games and pitcher with a 3.20 ERA. In 157.1 innings, he picked up a career high 151 strikeouts.
After the Phillies suffered elimination at the hands of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League Division Series (NLDS), Suarez was offered a $22.05 million qualifying offer. The pitcher rejected that deal and opted free agency.
Amid some interest from the New York Mets and the Baltimore Orioles, the Red Sox roped in the 30-year-old on a mega deal. This brought an end to Suarez’s 8-year stay with the Phillies.

Earlier this offseason, the Red Sox did make some trade moves. One of them saw the team acquire pitcher Sonny Gray in a deal from the St. Louis Cardinals. They also traded for pitcher Johan Oveido.
The AL East side is now expected to have a pitching rotation consisting of Garrett Crochet, Suarez, Gray, Oveido and Brayan Bello.

Former MLB star claims Red Sox did not believe that Alex Bregman had a better offer
Alex Bregman’s $175 million deal with the Chicago Cubs is one of the biggest deals of the offseason this year. Days after his deal, a former MLB star claimed that the Boston Red Sox at first did not believe that the player had a better offer somewhere else.

On Monday’s episode of Foul Territory, ex-MLB star A.J. Pierzynski spoke on this. The former Red Sox catcher expressed that the team did make an offer to him early in the offseason.
Bregman’s camp felt that the offer was low. The Red Sox, however, were not willing to budge and told him to take it or leave it.
As per Pierzynski, his former side would then refuse to believe that the 3-time All-Star had a better offer from another team. It was then that the team put up a 5-year, $165 million offer. By the time this offer came, it was too late.
Alex Bregman became frustrated with the Red Sox because they were unwilling to meet his market after their initial offer, says @AJPierzynski12.

Bregman’s deal with the Cubs does have a deferral as well. As per reports from MLB.com, $70 million of his deal will be deferred. On top of that, he does have a full no-trade clause and no opt-outs.
Bo Bichette is now the name that is being linked with the Red Sox. The player is expected to ask for $300 million in free agency. With the deal for Ranger Suarez, it will be interesting to see if the Boston-based side will go for him.
