Cincinnati Reds fire manager David Bell after a six-year tenure as the team fails to qualify for the postseason games for the 4th straight time. During Bell’s term, the team reached the playoffs once in 2020 during the shortened COVID-19 season.

However, the team faced a wild card exit after failing to score in the series against the Atlanta Braves. The announcement was made on Sunday and later, the Reds’ president of baseball operations Nick Krall put a statement on social media on David Bell’s firing.

This year the team recorded a 76-81 score with the last five games remaining in the regular season. Following the 2020 results, the team lost 100 games in 2022, but they extended Bell’s contract after improved results in 2023 which should have run halfway through the 2026 season.

David provided the kind of steadiness that we needed in our clubhouse over the last few seasons. We felt a change was needed to move the Major League team forward. We have not achieved the success we expected, and we need to begin focusing on 2025.

According to reports, bench coach Freddie Benavides will be named the interim manager for the team’s final games of the season at Cleveland and Chicago. It is rumored that Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker may be a replacement for Bell; although he has yet to leave the Marlins.

Fans on social media commented how the team could have let him finish the season before firing, as only five games remained. While many others stated how it should have been done earlier to avoid postseason disqualification once more.

One X user stated, “Had enough of him. Didn’t even want him to finish out the year”. Another penned, “Meaningless change as long as Castellini owns the team.” Check out more reactions below:

The club had high expectations from David Bell coming into the 2024 season. However, the Reds ended up 11 ½ games out of the NL Wild Card spot and were eliminated from playoff contention last week.
