The Atlanta Falcons’ wide receiver Drake London is trending but for all the wrong reasons as he almost cost his team their close 22-21 victory in week 2. As he was caught doing a machine gun celebration following the game-winning touchdown that he caught reflecting his unsportsmanlike conduct.
Till the fourth quarter, the Monday Night Football game was dominated by the Philadelphia Eagles. But then, running back Saquon Barkley dropped a pass compelling Philly to settle with a field goal and the ball came into the hands of the Falcons’ Kirk Cousins, who threw it to London for a successful touchdown.
However, in over-excitement, the 2022 first-round pick made a machine gun using his hands firing in the air to celebrate. What made things worse was an NFL official was standing right next to him and the game-winning extra point earned by the Falcons was taken back after a flag was thrown over the receiver’s conduct.
At the moment it seemed, the game slipped away from the hands of Atlanta and they would record their second back-to-back loss. If that wasn’t enough, the referee went near the already fuming Falcons’ head coach Raheem Morris and imitated London’s machine gun celebration to taunt them for the foolish act by London.
Fortunately for the Falcons, kicker Younghoe Koo delivered a remarkable sequence of an onside kick and secured the victory at 22-21. Meanwhile, the wideout was penalized over his conduct, which is labeled as a “violent gesture” by the NFL, considering the sensitive issue of guns in America.
Drake London’s game-winning touchdown earns respect
In spite of his controversial celebration, the Falcons’ wideout received appreciation for his performance against the Eagles in week 2. And this praise was showered by the opposing cornerback, Darius Slay, who took responsibility for his team’s loss on Monday.
The Philly CB appreciated the former USC standout by saying, “Good route” to the ball he caught thrown by the star signal-caller on a 70-yard drive late in the game. Quarterback Cousins was under intense pressure throughout the game on Monday, as his team didn’t log any touchdown until just two minutes remaining in the game.
Cousins, who is coming off a major Achilles injury from last year, finished the game with 20 out of his 29 passes completed for 241 yards and two touchdowns. Meanwhile, wideout London logged 6 receptions, 54 yards, and one touchdown.
