Cam Ward is making the best use of the training camp. He’s getting to know the officials on a professional and personal level.

Footage from the Titans camp revealed a conversation between Ward and one of the referees. Ward jokingly tried bribing the official for some calls in his favor, but the referee stayed true to his code of honor. “I ain’t giving you nothing dawg,” the referee told Ward.

Last week, Ward made his much-anticipated debut for the Tennessee Titans in the preseason opener against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Ward completed 5 of 8 passes for 67 yards before leaving after the team’s second offensive series.

Ward admitted it wasn’t the start he envisioned, but he will build upon it in the coming weeks. Sure enough, reports from the recent Titans camp suggest that the rookie is growing in confidence. Ward said (ht/Titans official transcript):

The biggest thing was us being able to play in a real-game atmosphere together, getting the vibe of each other and then playing together like we did.

Ward’s first completion was a 27-yard pass to veteran wide receiver Calvin Ridley. The duo further connected for 10 and 13 yards. Later, the first-year shot caller found former Seahawk Tyler Lockett before setting up Tony Pollard for a rushing touchdown.

Cam Ward understands how important the 2025 season is for Brian Callahan

The Titans appointed Callahan before the start of the 2024 season. However, he is already in the hot seat after posting a 3-14 record.

The new season is not only a big test for Ward to prove that he’s worthy of the number one draft pick, but also has the responsibility of Callahan’s future. Ward said via AtoZ Sports:

I just think [coach Callahan’s] going to put me in the best position to succeed… That’s for my quarterbacks coach, Coach Bo, and OC Coach Nick. I’m trying to play as long as I can for Tennessee with those three guys at the helm. Those guys, they continuously give me feedback [and] answer every question to the little details as much as I need it.

Ward was projected to win the Titans quarterback role, but his job was made easy after Will Levis withdrew his name from the race to undergo shoulder surgery. Levis started 12 games last season, completing 190 passes for 2091 yards, 13 touchdowns, and 12 picks. He was sacked 41 times, fumbled the ball 10 times, and lost it 6 times (most in the league).

Cam Ward had modest beginnings. He received zero stars following his graduation from high school. Incarnate Word gave the Texas native a chance, and he posted a 13-6 record.

FBS teams finally noticed Ward’s ceiling. He entered the transfer portal and signed with the Washington State Cougars, where he spent two years, posting a 12-13 record before moving to the Miami Hurricanes in 2024.

Ward led the Hurricanes to a 10-3 regular season finish and an appearance in the Pop-Tarts Bowl against the Iowa State Cyclones, which they lost 42-41. He ended his final year of college eligibility with 305 completions for 4313 yards, 39 touchdowns, and 7 picks.

The Titans drafted Ward first overall a few months later. During his introductory press conference, legendary Titans quarterback Warren Moon unretired his number one jersey to let Ward wear it in the NFL.
