Liverpool succumbed to a 3-1 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid in the quarterfinals first leg of the UEFA Champions League. Vinicius junior scored two goals along with Asensio to give Madrid the win.

However just like much of their recent UCL success can be accredited to referees coming to their rescue, yesterday’s game was not much different. It has become a pattern with Spanish sides and not much seems to change.

Jurgen Klopp reveals the Sadio Mane incident

Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp was absolutely livid with match official Felix Brych after the game and revealed that the German referee had said something personal to Sadio Mane. However the contents of this conversation were not revealed but it was clearly something that made him unhappy.

Sadio Mane had appealed against a clear foul on him but Felix Brych had simply waived on for play to carry on indicating a dive. This was shortly before the second goal after the Senegalese was entangled with Lucas Vasquez. This makes the incident all the more important.

Jurgen Klopp was modest enough to suggest that Liverpool weren’t at their best and didn’t lose because of the referees. However he did say that I’m crucial matches it does pay to have a ‘ok’ referee.

“The situation with Sadio, I have to say what the referee did tonight I don’t understand. For me that was something personal, because he dealt with the situation with Sadio, which is a clear foul, like it was a dive or something.

“And from that moment whenever Sadio went down, he couldn’t get anything anymore. That’s just not right.

“That’s what I told him after the game, that I just thought he was unfair with Sadio, and that’s how it is.
