Aaron Rodgers‘ return to football was the most exciting news tonight. Returning after almost a year, his New York Jets shored up their offensive line to ensure no repeat of last year’s horror. Star offensive tackle Tyron Smith gave sigh of relief to Jets fans as he did not allow a single sack on his new QB. But some of his moves on Nick Bosa had the San Francisco 49ers fans livid.

For much of the game, Nick Bosa preferred to line up on the right side of the 49ers defense. That meant he was going up against arguably one of the best left tackles in NFL history. But Smith is 33 years old and not as quick as he used to be.

Bosa used his quickness and speed to try and use that to his advantage. It forced the former All-Pro tackle to resort to grabbing Bosa in a chokehold form. Surprisingly, this play went unnoticed.

Instead, they threw a flag on the offensive line for an illegal formation. Then they did not call a pass interference when Deebo Samuel was clearly impeded. All of these calls later and San Francisco 49ers fans started to chant,“Refs you suck.”

Even if the other calls can be argued as 50-50 scenarios, the hold on Bosa was inexplicable. That too not once, but Tyron Smith used his left hand to hold the Pro-Bowler in that position on multiple snaps.

Had the officiating been fair, the San Francisco 49ers could have scored more than the 32 points they put up. But their defense did their part despite not being able to get to Rodgers in the manner they usually do. That defense helped keep Rodgers and the New York Jets at bay in his first game back.

After the first touchdown by Breece Hall, the 49ers defense forced the 4-time league MVP to two punts and an interception in their next three drives. Against extremely accurate Rodgers, that is a good testament to their collective play under Kyle Shanahan. They were without a couple of Pro-Bowlers, but still played well to win the game.

Add to that Brandon Aiyuk dropped an easy touchdown grab, showing rust from not participating in training camp. Trent Williams needs game fitness. Most importantly, they need Christian McCaffrey back. This goes to show that the win shows that the 49ers are Super Bowl favorites for a reason.
