American tennis player Reilly Opelka recently took to Instagram to rant about the heavy fine he has received from the ATP, amounting to $90,000. The 27-year-old on his social media covered some fines accumulated during the Dallas Open and Indian Wells. At the fourth round of the Dallas Open, Opelka was frustrated upon receiving a code violation and point penalty while serving for the match in the third set against Great Britain’s Cameron Norrie.

After winning 4-6, 7-6 (5), 6-4, Opelka called out umpire Greg Allensworth for not listening to his concerns regarding a disruptive spectator. On Instagram he shared a document on the investigation by the ATP on whether his conduct constituted a Player Major Offense under Section 8.05 of the ATP Player Code of Conduct. Opelka claims to have been fined $40k for these comments:

Greg Allensworth is the worst ref in ATP. We are talking in the locker room with all the players… the worst ump on tour. I was like, no doubt-Allensworth, he is real bad… It’s bush league, I mean it’s expected. We all talk about how bad this guy is… that was bush league.

Opelka also shared documents related to the Indian Wells, where he was fined for calling the chair umpire Nacho Forcadell an idiot during his opening round loss to Roman Safiullin. Opelka had expressed his frustration to Forcadell about poor visibility due to insufficient lighting.

He refused to continue playing the match until the problem was resolved, even requesting a medical timeout to substantiate his point. For his comments, his extended medical timeout, and for delaying play, Opelka was slapped with a $30k fine.

Reilly Opelka speaks about his rapport with US Open mixed doubles partner Venus Williams

Venus Williams stunned fans last month by returning to the WTA tour after a 16-month hiatus at the age of 45. The seven-time Grand Slam champion defied her age by winning both her opening round singles and doubles matches at the Mubadala Citi DC Open.

With her straight-sets win over Peyton Stearns in DC, Williams became the second oldest person to win a WTA singles match after Martina Navratilova. In 2004, Navratilova won her opening round match at Wimbledon at the age of 47.

Although Williams has not won a match since then, she has received a wildcard for both the singles and mixed doubles events at the US Open. For the mixed doubles event, which commences next week, she will be pairing with Reilly Opelka.

She is a two-time singles champion at the US Open and the 1998 mixed doubles champion at Flushing Meadows alongside Max Mirnyi. Opelka had earlier spoken to Tennis Channel about his rapport with the American tennis icon:

We both love tennis. We both love art. We both live in South Florida. So, yeah, I think, you know, we practiced together and in West Palm Beach a few times, and then, you know, we’re travelling and playing a lot of the same tournaments, heard a lot of bands and art galleries and a lot of you know, we’re foodies… we have a lot in common.

Opelka reached the round of 32 in Cincinnati, where he lost to Argentina’s Francisco Comesana in three sets. Meanwhile, Williams fell in straight sets to Jessica Bouzas Maneiro in her opening round in Cincinnati.
