Former doubles World No. 1 from Australia, Rennae Stubbs, claimed that the loss against Novak Djokovic in the Olympics final has taken a toll on Carlos Alcaraz mentally. The young Spaniard was visibly upset with that result as he broke down during the post-match interview while questioning if he would ever get a better chance to win gold for his country.
In his first tournament after the devastating loss, in Cincinnati, Carlos Alcaraz was surprisingly knocked out in his first match by French veteran showman Gael Monfils. This match saw Alcaraz’s frustration unravel as he obliterated his racket and drew heavy criticism.
Stubbs urged that Alcaraz’s constant presence on the tour and the number of matches he is playing is adding to the pressure that he already bears after achieving unbelievable successes at such a young age. However, she believes all the players who included both the Olympic Games and the Cincinnati Masters in their schedules are likely exhausted from the continuous competition.
His (Alcaraz’s) brain is still broken from losing the gold medal. I think he’s played a lot of tennis and he’s got a lot of pressure on his shoulders now. I think he’s tired now. Anyone who came off of playing at the Olympics and was playing in Cincinnati was just, mentally and physically drained.Rennae Stubbs via her tennis podcast
Carlos Alcaraz loses friendly match against Novak Djokovic just weeks after Olympics disappointment
As part of the US Open Fan Week, Carlos Alcaraz and Novak Djokovic accompanied legends John McEnroe and Andre Agassi in an exhibition match to raise funds for the USTA Foundation which helps budding tennis talent in the country. Alcaraz teamed up with Agassi while Djokovic partnered with McEnroe.
In a light-hearted match to 10 points played on August 21st, the two teams entertained the crowd and may have even made some nostalgic moments as Agassi demolished his backhands in vintage fashion while McEnroe demonstrated his impeccable skills at the net. Despite being the favorites to win the tie, Alcaraz-Agassi went down 0-5 in the first few minutes and couldn’t quite catch up.
They went on to lose 8-10. But Alcaraz was able to find some consolation right after as he topped Forbes’ list of the highest-paid tennis players of 2024. He beat Novak Djokovic by a staggering $5 million in total earnings to take the first spot.
