Angel Ruiz-Cotorro, the renowned doctor, who has for many years worked with Rafael Nadal, said the 22-time Grand Slam champion always pushed him to limits. Nadal’s entire career was marred by injuries, and injuries only defeated him at the end.

He never fully recovered from the hip injury he suffered at the 2023 Australian Open. Following a long injury layoff, he did try to be back at the 2024 Brisbane International but an abdominal injury forced to him stay on the sidelines for a few more months.

The 38-year-old finally made his much-awaited comeback at the Barcelona Open the same year and participated in several clay-court events, including at the French Open. But the Kind of Clay fell to eventual finalist Alexander Zverev in the first round at Roland Garros, the tournament he lifted for a record 14 times.

After his last ATP singles event in Bastad, Nadal finally bade his farewell to tennis at the Davis Cup. Ruiz-Cotorro, during an interview, reflected on his career and said he learned a lot from Nadal and different players, especially during Grand Slam events when more than 20 players were under his team’s control.

Nadal, obviously, pushed you to the limit, but we were more prepared. I have been able to offer tennis players having lived through many careers. And that is where I think I have contributed the most, and that is what I want to contribute now.

Nadal’s uncle Toni Nadal, who had criticized the Davis Cup for their farewell to the Grand Slam legend in Malaga, made his feelings known about the French Open’s grand gesture. Toni had claimed that Nadal’s farewell, following Spain’s defeat to the Netherlands, wasn’t fitting.

A tribute to Roland Garros makes us very happy as a family. Rafael is very happy that he is being given this attention. I know that they have been preparing it for some time and I think it will be a great tribute.

Toni Nadal told Marca

Nadal recently was honored as the best Spanish sportsman by the media outlet Mundo Deportivo. During the press event, Nadal said that he didn’t miss tennis because he is living his life without constant pain.
